So, I spent 2 years working in a mcdonalds store (I'm free now though!) and worked on the drive thru alot. What I noticed was that about 80% of drivers simply pulled their handbrakes up without using the button! I know this does damage to your handbrake and it's no harder to push the button in while pulling up!

So, do you mk2 ibiza drivers push or not? :)

I was told by many people that it does.. Any proof on your theory? :)

I did it everytime I drove all of my cars, and that'd be about 500k by now. and they've never failled on me

I've also taken 3 to bits, and they're fine too.

any theory on yours? or just hearsay?

well yeah, it's not like you pull it like a ripcord on a lawn mower.

2 or three ratchets for a well adjusted HB.

your driving instructor will have told you to hold the button in, because it will grate on the examiners mind. that's all

i cant see it being bad at all , I mean u search ebay , look at all the cars and all the 'bad points' and find just one that says ' handbrake not working due to non-button pressing'

Just hearsay mate. Would have thought it'd wear the ratchets down though. Guess it's a myth until properly proven..

Someone contact mythbusters :D

But yes, the noise is one of those that grinds on me.. I hate it!

Maybe it is all a myth, but most driving instructors and certainly advanced driving instructors say don't ratchet the handbrake. I know that doesn't necessarily mean there's a sound mechanical reason for it but surely any steps we take to reduce wear is good (ie why brakes are the recommended means of slowing rather than going through the gears?).

It does do damage to the ratchet, well, on my first car it did...

A 1989 1.3 Polo Squareback. Had a lot of this abuse in its life and the ratchet mechanism was only aluminium. By the time I got it, had taken its toll so much you could pull it up and tap it down again with the button out where the teeth were so worn away.

It failed its first MOT in my hands :(

its just a ratchet, no way does it damage it - take the leather gaiter off and have a look its 6mm steel! - its designed to be a ratchet, it just sounds horrible

Exactly its a ratchet, its engineered to be a ratchet and do the job of a ratchet. :)

I'd say if people are pulling them up too hard they are just stretching the cables so making the handbrake perform badly. The ratchet lets you know in some way how much its pulled, 3 or 4 clicks should be ample in most situations. Any more and you need to have a look at the handbrake, it either needs to be adjusted or repaired.
