Hi guys, im new to the forum. Thought id start off by posting this diy guide on how to take off your skirts and repair them. The same method would apply to any plastic or fibreglass parts of the car.

Everything I used (except the tigerseal) can be bought from halfords. Telford halfords mix paint in the pots as well as rattle cans, and the colour match is very good.
You will need:
Range of different grade grit wet n dry.
Body filler,
Fibreglass repair kit,
Razor blade,
Tigerseal,
Primer,
Basecoat,
Clearcoat / Lacquer,
Masking tape,
Hot air gun.
First thing to do is to put masking tape just above the sideskirt, so you know where the correct position is when you come to re-fit it. It also stops getting tigerseal all over your car!

As you can see, my sideskirt has quite a nasty crack just above the jacking point.
To remove it, simply unscrew the front and rear sideskirt screws (torx and cross head).
Once they are removed i simply removed the jacking covers by pulling them off and gave the side skirt a bit of a press with my foot and gently began pulling it off.

Now, what a lot of people don’t do! You MUST drill a hole at either end of the crack to prevent the crack from ever spreading.
LeonSkirtRepair009.jpg

If you have a dremel or grinder (or similar), make a groove all the way down the crack, not too deep, but deep enough so the filler you will be using will bond both sides of the crack together.
LeonSkirtRepair016.jpg

Now, on the inside of the skirts, you want to make a few grooves into the back of the crack for the fibreglass resin to bond to. You also want to make the area free from dirt and also sand the paintwork on both sides where the crack is (enough to take the shine off the clear coat).
LeonSkirtRepair012.jpg

Fill the inside area with a thick dose of the fibreglass resin

Add the thin strips of fibreglass

Then resin over the top of them!

I cheated and heated them up gently with a heat gun
Now when the fibreglass seems dry, you want to mix up some filler. Apply a thin grip layer first to the front of the skirt and then leave to dry or heat it with the heat gun. Remember, less on less off!
Then add another smooth layer, leave to dry or heat it up, then you want to flat it.
Start with something low like 80 grit paper and then to finish it off use 240 grit, then maybe 400 grit.
It should then look a little something like this.

Now the fun bit, applying the primer. I am using an air compressor and using spray guns with a 1.0mm tip, but good results could also be achieved using halfords cans, as it’s the exact same paint.
A trick i do is to hold the heat gun the same distance away from the skirt so it is heating the paint up before it even hits the skirts. Reason being, it dries much quicker and sticks much better!
Start with just a light dust coat, then add another 1 or 2 heavy coats. Leave to dry

Take a look at the primer, if it looks good and looks like its covered everything, you want to spray some water onto it and flat it with 800 grit paper until it is a nice smooth finish. Give it a wipe down, and then apply the basecoat. Start with a light dust coat, then progress to a heavy ish dust coat (using the heat gun method to speed up drying time).
Then spray the lacquer / clearcoat on once the paint is dry. (im using halfords acrylic paint mixed for me in a ½ ltr tin. All halfords paint should dry to the touch within 10-15 minutes as long as it is applied right.)
Start with a dust coat and leave it to dry for a few minutes. This way, you reduce the chance of it running as the next coat grips the dust coat very well.
Apply now a nice thick coat all over. You can leave it to flash for 5 or 10 minutes and then apply another coat, but I find that 1 heavy coat is usually enough.

Admire at the paint job you have just done, leave it to dry, and give yourself a pat on the back.

To fit, it’s very simple. Just remove the old bonding glue with a razor off both the car and the skirts. Apply the new bonding glue ( I use and rate tigerseal!) and fit the screws in front & rear, then hold the skirt in place with some NEW masking tape. Old stuff just falls off. The wider masking tape is best for this job.

Leave it to dry and after 2 hours you can remove the tape. I went straight onto the m54 after about an hour and a half and didn’t hang about and the side skirt stayed on!
Happy Days!

Well my sister lives in ashford so i can pop down one time lol! To be honest, this side came out really good but the other side was a mess!

To anyone who tries this, dont try and be clever and warm up the tigerseal, it seriously doesnt stick for like half an hour lol.

Most ladies i know dont know what a sideskirt even is! I got it from ebay, pretty cheap i guess. I think you could do with pulling the sideskirt off and then resticking it. Really easy to pull it off, and as long as you have a razorblade its pretty simples to get the old stuff off.

Ha ha there are some ladies put there who care for their cars just as much as guys do without it making them less feminine. Lol.

Wicked, thanks! The only issue I have is all the old stuff is actually stuck to the car, not on the side skirt, so it's leaving a really ugly part on the car at the moment! Would I be OK to gently take it off there is is there any paint I could damage? Would it not be easier to heat it up and remove it or does that not quite work?

Not enough like you out there thats for sure!

Yeah the old stuff being stuck car, right, it should be hidden when the skirts are properly on though? So if you do take some paint off it shouldnt matter too much. The only thing that will get it off is a razorblade or a toffee wheel http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stripe-Re..._Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item43a324d2b9

Toffee wheels are put in the end of a normal drill and basicly you just go over the old rubber glue stuff and it comes straight off without damaging the paint. They realy do work a treat. If you dont want to buy one then try pulling your old stuff off, mine just pulled off by hand and sometimes having to use a razorblade. Standard thinners will help remove it too :)

Even better, my brother has a toffee wheel so I know who's tool shed I'm going to raid tomorrow! And I've found some black Tigerseal that would probably look a tad better than the sealant that is currently on there..

Seems easy enough! If not I'll have to just let someone else do it for me...providing I havent either stuck myself to my car with the sealant or made a complete mess of it :)

Ta very much for your help! :)

Well thats quite lucky isnt it lol.

Yeah its kind of easy, just take your time with it. Mask the top of the sideskirt and mask just above the sideskirt with masking tape so you dont get it everywhere. If you do get it evrywhere, just use thinners and a clean rag. Good luck, keep me posted! :)

Yeah try not to stick yourself to the car, its not a good look wearing your car.
