Why are you not wanting it to be a CupraSport? I thought they all were & just the older 1.8's were Gti's?
8v Cupra is 1 group higher insurance than the 8v GTi (11 vs 10) so although the GTi should have a better spec, it is actually cheaper to insure!
Pre facelift and back in 1993 at introduction, there was an 2.0 8v, officially known as a GT, but badged as a GTi on front, rear, steering wheel and seats. I have one of these. It had no abs, no aircon, no airbags, and although mine has a sunroof, I think it was an option as I've seen other 1994 GTi s without.
For the 1994 model year only, there was an additional car, the GTE, which had the same engine but I believe it had ABS and / or Driver's airbag as standard.
The GTE trim was only available for that one model year, it was deleted for 1995 (i.e. on the road autumn 1994 onwards) when the GTi was given ABS and I believe the airbag as standard. The 1.8 16v with 130bhp arrived in 1995 I think as well. No idea what the spec of those were.
