Cheers for your help guys going to get a new sensor for it and see how we go from there. Would the sensor being faulty be the reason why there's more coolant in the tank? Not sending out the signal to circulate the coolant round?

If the temp is dropping when you at speed then its 99% a faulty thermostat.

So what's the other 1%?!?

To quote myself from another thread:

I have now replaced the CTS and the thermostat, the climate control diagnostic panel reads a constant 90, my mpg is as good as it ever was (mid/high 30's on a run) and the heater works fine. Yet my temp gauge still drops when I go down hill or take my foot of the gas for more than a few seconds. My mechanic said when he replaced the thermostat that he couldn't see anything wrong with the old one either.

So I've now spent over 60 quid replacing things that probably worked fine which is annoying. Or to look at it positively, it's cost me that amount to confirm that my engine is running at the correct temperature and I supposedly have working parts. It seems literally the only thing not working properly is the needle, so do I just put up with it as one of my car's quirks (as others on here seem to do), or carry on wondering if something is seriously wrong??

No as it is moved around by the pump and controlled by the thermostat.

30 minutes maximum with the right wobbly ended sockets/extensions

i've got exactly the same issue. replased CTS and thermostat. Temp gauge needle never gets to 90 even though the climate control panel reads 90. Confused?

does anyone have a picture of the engine where they could point out where the CTS and thermostat are?
thanks

Thermostat follow the bottom hose from the radiator to the block.

CTS is in the top coolant hose to the right of the engine, need to remove the two covers.

Changed my thermostat and CTS today. Firstly what a PITA the thermostat is, the CTS is easy just a small horseshoe clip holding it in place. My temperature gauge wasn't getting above 75degrees but it use to sit at 90. After changing these parts all is good and working perfectly again :)

I only found out about the climate control dianogstics today. 51 on the climate control is Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) in deg C.

Is the figure it displays taken from the CTS? Also where does the needle on the dash read from?

Thanks.

Thought you guys might be interested to know that I seem to have solved the problem - by having a service!! I've had the oil changed since the needle issue but last week the air filter was replaced too and since then the needle has stopped wandering. Can't work out why that would have affected the dash but I'm not complaining!

Climate Control gets its engine coolant temperature reading from the ECU, which gets it from one sensor in the CTS. The dash gauge uses a completely separate sensor in the CTS. The dash gauge is a simple analog gauge which can be fitted to cars without an ECU.
