Hi guys, some 280 owner has just posted in the newbie's section that his turbo has popped and been in for repair, so the problem has now got real for Cupra 280 owners.

I wouldn't be so sure of that, the early part of this thread states the problem with the turbo is down to a sealing face issue. The newbie with the blown turbo had a shaft snap, not something I would think could be caused by a failed seal.

I like others on here tend to think there is lot of internet hype involved with this story, if you read through this thread details of the faulty part number are not even consistent.

As for the new guy with the failed turbo, **** happens! It is a mass produced component and a percentage of them will fail, that's life!

"From what I've seen, it's not a scream and explode to a 1000 pieces situation. The Axial shaft snaps where it necks down to the compressor wheel. It's a thin piece, but other turbos are equally as thin or thinner, such as the K04. The latest revision must have either better tolerances or better materials. We're curious so we're looking into it further"

Golf forum can't remember which one think it's the mk7 one try gti turbo recall mk7 in Google, not at my computer no more it's Friday after all :)

Thanks anyway but I'm not interested enough to waste time trawling through other forums for what I still think is a bit of a non story.

There are plenty regular contributors on this forum driving Cupra 280's, when they start reporting problems, then I will take it seriously.

Hope your right Biker, part of me thinks the exact same as you, but also that niggling fact that there is no smoke without fire, makes me also wonder what is the truth on this so called problem, as I too have the "dodgy"? N turbo.

Not forget that the problems reported with the IHI turbo was in a batch from March - April so for sure not all cars with a N version will have these troubles but I collected my Cupra yesterday and will of course keep a close eye on it as does my dealer.

Ok, that is not much.
But you don't know how the car was driven as a demo.
Driven hard when warm isn't a problem but driving hard and stop immediately without cooling down a minute could be a thing. I disabled with Vagcom the start/stop function so the engine keeps running coming form the motorway.
Important since I drive a lot motorway in Germany a bit faster than 70 mph!
But nevertheless a turbo failure is always possible but I hope it isn't connected with the problems with the IHI batch of turbo's from April/May 2014.
Keep us posted about the outcome.
