I'm in same boat .. done one alloy on front already (Cupra tdi). Answer is buy and FR and chip it, maybe add the Cupra intake first.. as long as you do not lean on the brakes too much it will be fine and pretty much same.. even get buttons on the steering wheel and cruise control as an option to compenstate! I would have done this but got tempted by even more power and needed value to keep company car lot happy! You could run a few less psi in the tyres.. but monitor tyre wear patterns (factory alignment makes them stink anyway!).

The rest has been discussed, cannot change alloy without brakes, cannot change ratio without messing with gearing/insurance, get a soft sidewall is one answer.

Tyre walls.. hmm... I got the car with the Pirelli Nero's, changed to Falkens but the ride was not noticably changed. I would have thought tyre walls would affect most of the time, but surely with a 40 profile, anything too soft will make the bumps harm the alloy?

and protect the alloy more with a higher profile and softer tyre!

Well, thats what started the thread :) I wanted to know the profile of tyre to use with a 16" wheel to keep the rolling ratio the same so as not to balls up the accuracy of the speedo. :)

Now I know from all the useful chat that I cannot go down to a 16" rim because of the lovely barake system on my cupra.

Guess this now leads onto...... what profile can I go up to with the Ibiza cupra on stock wheels before I get rubbing and other problems? With regards to the speedo, my tomtom will give me an accurate reading so I shouldnt be going over speed limits... (or at least not without realising!!!!!!!:D

speedo's read to high any way so fractionaly enlarging the prophile wont throw it out and you wont get rubbing because my cupra is lowered to the max and doesnt get any rubs so an exta inch of tyre all the way round wont cause rubbing

Hmm... help a 'metric' guy out a little :) an extra inch equates to what in tyre profiles? 205/40 up to 205/50??

My rears are near to needing replacing so may try it there first.

IMO higher profile tyres will be easyer to do and will have the best results in ride comfort, hell they will even fill the arches a little more

I am half considering it myself but would only do it when new tyres are needed (only 10k on the clock and they are all fine still 5mm front and 7mm back :p

I am def going to try the higher profile route, maybe look into /45's I think /50 on 205s are more tricky to find, and is a bigger jump from /40 :)
As I posted earlier, my rears will need changing in a couple months or so, but the fronts were new in May, so unless I find a real bargain for buying 4, I wont be doing those. :)

I would also like to take this oportunity to thank all the replies, I realy didnt want to change the suspension as the only prob I have with the stock one is the bad absorb of pot holes, other than that, it suits the car.

215/40/17s will probably help, they don't throw the speedo out as they're only slightly bigger.

I was going to do this with mine as I wanted some rim protection living in town centre and letting the missus drive it, but the price difference was something I could do without at the time.

The 40 part of the tyre size is the percentage of the width, so when the tyre gets wider, the sidewall gets bigger.

for example take all the new BMW's that have the run flat tyres fitted as standard. Everybody complains about the ride in them being so hard, i know because my pops has a 330 M Sport and the ride in that is so harsh, caused by the very stiff side walls.

so before you go through the expensive of a new suspension setup why not try fitting new tyres?
