Release bearings dont whine in 1 gear, the make a noise unless the clutch is depressed, some make a squeek or a squeek, some grumble, sometimes can be felt through the pedal.

To sum it up, its VW again making things cheaply, like the coil packs, and the green cap gearboxes where the rivits shear and blow a hole in the casing. Nearly everything they made from 1999 - 2005 ish are all cack and are riddled with faults.

Well finally got the car back yesterday and all is fine. They replaced the bearing and the slave and relevant pipe work as well as compleatly replacing 3rd gear, casing and other internal's and the tick noise? has gone and is perfect. Warrenty paid the full bill which was 1100 pounds:clap: Got a 500 mile running in period before the remap.... happy days.

Update

Stealer has just rang and said it could be dual mass!! Like some of you didnt already know. Now my problem is they should foot the bill as they had the box off and there was **** all wrong with the dual mass whne it went in for its first repair under warranty. Need some advise on how far I should stick to my guns..

im not sure tbh i just no its geabox related and it started of the same symptoms as this thread, weird noise in 3rd. The car now wont move in any way not even a mm. I would guess that the gearbox has been royaly shafted.

Ouch that gearbox is scrap as it sounds like cogs have been flying :cartman:

On a more serious note, you should have questioned the noise as soon as it started.

The noise was there from when i bought the car i think i just didnt notice, and after reading on here people said theirs had displayed similar symptoms over a prolonged period of time i guessed nothing would come of it. Im half glad it happened as the warranty ends in 2 months and they wouldnt fix it for a weird noise, they might for this though
