Cupra R 3rd whinning

Hi, Over the last few months noticed that my cupra R 3rd gear is whinning on change down from forth gear, never going up the gears. So I took it to seat as its under seat used car warranty and they have said that its the synchro on 3rd??? didnt think it whinned. Now comes the [:@] bit, I have to pay them £561 to strip and remove the syn's for seat's inspection to see wether I have been ragging the arse of it( which I havnt, cant afford to) and wether they will pay for the problem!!! I have only put 7k on the thing since buying last year(bought at 54k). Now I have been doing a bit of research online and it seems that im not the only one to have this problem, seems like theres a sychro problem with this box that seat dont wanna hold there hands up to. Any advise will be much appreciated

They have told me that the 561 is in case the warranty does't pay, labour charges. I thought that if its sychromesh that it crunched into gear and not whined like it is, evens whines when slowing down in third without touching the clutch. I think is gearing? Theye are gonna send me the pictures of the said damaged parts today hopefully. Can someone advise if im correct in thinking the above.

Exactly the same thing happens with mine. Took it to a gear box specialist and he's told me not to worry about it as it was no where near bad enough to strip the box as he didn't think he would find anything. He told me to just keep an eye on it and if it starts to get worse to bring it back and he'll sort it.

.....and here is another one. There must be something going on with these boxes. Seems to be an ever increasing problem. I was told the same as Fergal84. Let it get worse otherwise they will struggle to find anything.

Deadjester, is your car a 53/04 plate??

Matt.

Now there’s a shock!!!
I’m sure I remember reading somewhere, may have been on here, that around 53/04 the incorrect oil was used in the boxes. I don’t know if this was ever proved. It’s always possible I could of dreamt this and I’m talking :censored:

Will be interesting to see what the outcome of this is. As for the “ragging” it comment, what is the point in having a car with 225bhp if you cant “use” the power available. I would say its more likely to be the bearing(s) that are gone. As you said the syncro usually crunches on fast changes at higher rpm.

It could well be the syncro whining which is the start of problems, if it was the shaft bearing, it wouldent just be one gear whining, would be all on that shaft, going up and down the gears. The syncro is there t match the speed of the gear to the shaft its going onto, eliminating gear crunch when shifting. It might be worth changing the gear oil if its only just started and it may go queit as gear oil, like any other oil thins over time and becomes contaminated. Gearoil shouldent be overlooked on a car over 3 - 4 years old, especially on a performance car as the box has to take some abuse.

Well still no photos' and still no call. Spoke to a few more vag clients today and they are saying the same thing, that box has a issue. Was told today that some clever bugga decided to use rivets to connect the casing to the main box and these break!!! and smash thru the housing, but he said vag wont own up to this problem either!!! Ive decided im giving them no more money, will take this issue up with seat after I have had a independant report done. Through my job I have them q'ing up to help me....

No no, the rivits are the problem what hold the crown wheel on, they shear off and cause a hole in the case, there normally replaced with nuts. This is more common on the boxes that went on the 1.4 - 1.6 engines.

them rivits shear on the crown wheel.

Broken rivit

Replaced with nut and bolt

End result -

As said this isnt common on the 02m boxes and more on the 1.6 - 1.4 boxes when fools try wheel spinning and doghnuts, rebuild 2 of them and has the cases welded.

i think the 3rd gear whine is a common thing on most 6 speed boxes we have many people asking about them there probs is fix but most leave it as it is. including me mine does it all the same.
i know people have changed the oil and still the same problem of the noise

Thats good to hear mate, I might need your assitance if I have to take this up with seat, use you as a case reference, if thats ok. Its funny because mine only has 53k on and only put 7k on it since I bought it.

my box was replaced under warranty and had only done 20k. i refused to pay anything in the first instance and said its warranty work. Seat finally agreed and authorised Frosts to dow the work.

The funny part is the gearbox had nothing wrong with it visibily and frosts didnt have the technical know how to put it back together, so seat had to send a factory recon one! lol. Total joke in my opinion but didnt cost me nowt and now no whine.

Cant shed any light on the pics, just wanted to let you know my car is just under 53K and have only put on about 10K myself over last 15 month, my gearbox is making a grumbling grinding noise when turning right under load its a horrible noise, thin kits the diff bearings so get them to check all this aswell and get them to replace the bearings if they are carrying out the work.

Having so much trouble from these gearboxes at 50K miles is a joke, they must be pretty badly build or have weak points. They should be covered for a certain amount of mileage under warranty, cars just doing my head in at the moment :(
