And what an underwhelming car that was!

Unless it was a standard gti in disguise (it had the twin exit exhaust and the requisite wheels) this thing was far slower than its headline bhp figure suggests it should be...

The guy signalled his intent with a flash of the hazards, then pulling onto the Leatherhead bypass we were off (dual carriage). I started behind at 30 mph, by 80 I'd indicated right to move into outside lane to pass him, but 110 leptons I was moving easily past him - even had time to gesture a 'WTF, are you trying!?' at him as I cruised by. :p

I then decimated him under braking (those trackdays ARE useful), but let him catch up to repeat the experience back down the other side of the bypass. Full marks for effort, but a 'D' for execution Mr Pug.

different story if ur tractor was standard, but remapped its not surprising, off the line i doubt there be much in it, but mid range torque...well ur car does have pretty large hair dryer fitted to the engine

the 180 is a good car it just didnt live up to what was expected

Wow, they really are that bad!!

I gtech'd my dismal at 6.6 to 60 when standard, I'll check again this sunday - has been remapped for ages, just not got round to it.

Anyway - not surprised I punished this chump then.

My mate has a 206 GTi and if you compare standard forms of both cars, you will find that the 206 WILL eat up and spit out a derv...especially 80mph +. As for corners and track days.....dervs just dont cut it!!

As much as it pains me to say it...its true!!

i would be pretty confident in saying that a diesel cupra would have no problem with a 206 gti :p but then it also comes down to driver at the end of the day some people just cant drive

I beg to disagree with you comment re: derv's and trackdays Andy! The Cupra held its own very nicely, even with worn-to-the-wear-indicator front tyres. It proved both good and bad to have a fwd car with nose heavy weight distribution - good because you got reasonable traction and utter stability/predictability but bad because of the frustrating understeer - although ultimately the level of outright grip was good.

Good enough to see off all but a well driven evo and a radical - I pushed many a caterham round until they got the idea and moved over, simply put - Cadwell Park is a daunting place with standing water everywhere when you're in a car weighing less than 700 kg!

No harm to you, but your full of sh!t!!!!

An Evo would eat up any amount of tuned cupra-end of story.....think its unfair to say that the Evo was "well drievn" and use that as an excuse for not keeping up!!

Caterham's-bloody quick motors and built for a track.

And as for the derv being a great track car.....catch a grip!!! You are constantly changing gear, it understeers like a b1tch and the suspension just doesnt do it for me (even in a Cupra)!!!!

There is no doubt that in a straight line 30-80ish the derv torque is superb but show it a corner and your fcuked!! Stoney's diffed 130 is sharp around the corner but im sure he will be the first to tell you the truth about dervs and tracks!!

I did say I DIDN'T keep up with the evo, read the sodding post.

I did and have video footage to prove me keeping up with fiat coupe turbos, 200sx's caterhams etc etc etc.

Yes this probably wouldn't be the case on a track like Bedford autodrome GT circuit or indeed anywhere with long straights... but you go and try cadwell park in the streaming wet - a confidence inspiring setup is paramount.

I was at this trackday and civic WAS one of the quckest things on the track that day, commitment & driver skill can easily make up for horsepower.

THE quickest thing that day was a Vaux Senator, stripped out and with a VERY commited driver, he knew the braking points down to the last metre etc.

Having done many trackdays myself I cannot explain enougn how its all about the driver. YES in the right hands an Evo is simply amazing (I have driven a few) but it doesnt make you the fastest lapper on the day just by having one.

I have said video clips if anyone wants to host them, shows civic keeping up with alot of stuff more powerful, in the wet there is a limit to the USEABLE power you have compared to the actual power figure.

Maybe when you guys grown up a bit you'll understand this more, stop living in the 'my mate says world' and get out their and experience things for yourself.

Back to the main point being a Pug 180 - I can only comment on one experience.

Motorway speeds on a motorway funny enough, in a standard PD130 FR and the GTI was only just getting away......

Of course, no prove it was really going for it, but im pretty sure he was as the said drive of the Ibiza had been playing with him earlier.

i must say, quite a bold first post there mrbcool. coming from a fiat coupe owner...oh look the cupraD owner previously owned a fiat coupe too, u guys friends?

theres nothing wrong with what the topic is here...id actually be very surprised if a remapped cupra tdi was slower than a GTi 180, fact is its prob quicker than my 20vt on a rolling start

but dismissing other cars and talking rubbish is just petty...and the fact is unless uv had the pleasure of owning a 206 and really learning to drive one of them u cant have a valid opinion

and guess wot...i have owned a 206 :)

at the end of the day, well done ur remapped turbo charged engine was faster than a most definite standard GTi (obvious do to the fact u cant tune a 180 as theres FA out there to do to one)

kudos to u Civic_Legend, and u even got good mpg doing it

My ex has a 206 GTI (not 180), it wasnt a patch on the 106GTI i owned for 2 years. When did I slate ANY car?

Dont get me started on that disel of civics, its annoying fast, shame the gearbox doesnt respond well when being driven swiftly, hey Civic

Maybe your derv mate, but you are very wrong here, very wrong.

Maybe Audi should withdraw the R10 on your advice, they'll never win Le Mans with the diesel. God they will be gutted now, are you gonna ring em or shall I?

HeHe, how the preached are preaching :D

People always slate handling of DERVs, well I could mention a 182 I waisted not due to my car been quicker in a line (was dead even) not cos my car was faster off the lights (his was :() But due to the fact cornering he couldnt take it!?

Depends how mental the driver is...

not preached preaching as i had a 130 tdi whilst you were at school mate:p

but then i am one of the most qulaified in any argument now as i have had both tdi and Petrol of the same car.

but also know a fair bit about 206's due to my mates very modded one, which acidstrato knows too.
