Hey guys,

Had a bit of a mishap today on the way home from work. I normally give it some welly on the slip road going onto the motorway (thats what Turbo's are for  ) on the same road I go every day. Anyways, accelerating from 1st and through 2nd, pops it into 3rd and the FR 5 speed gearbox really shows how unpredictable it is. Crunch. But not any old crunch. Oh No. It was a squelching crunch, as if all of the lovely teeth on my third gear train are now gone. Now this woke me up somewhat, I normally switch off on the way home as im knackered, but this really woke me up. I felt sick all the way home and felt really angry at being such a tit. There has been loads of times ive noticed with this gearbox where it simply wont go into gear, and I always always catch it before I lift up the clutch, but today I had to be giving it a good boot when it let me down.

My questions are:

Is this now going to need a tran fluid change to get rid of those nasty shards of 3rd gear?

Has anyone else had this happen in any gear (normally always 1st and 2nd for me, but as I said I always catch it)

Have I done any damage to the gear train, and if so what do I do?

Im interested to hear everyones comments.

Cheers,

Nath.

I think quality gearboxes have a magnet in them to catch all the little bits of teeth

don't worry but if you do then get the gearbox oil changed

this can be a clutch problem or gear linkage problem mate as if the the clutch is not completly disengaging and is still slightly toching then the gears will struggle to engage but this sound like it could be a linkage problem to me as its 3rd gear take it to the dealers and they will sort it out for you unless your mechanically known???

First time I got the car I found it hard to get it into 2nd, all my mates say the same thing as well. And the drivers floor mat is a pain in the arse if it get wet and starts to curl up. Can feel the mat when depressing the cluch, feels like the rubber has moved away from the pedal.

I've started having the same problem with mine from 1st to 2nd, anytime the revs build up a little I can pretty much guarantee it will crunch into second, which is mega annoying for stuff like round-a-bouts where you occasionally need to change quicky from 1st to 2nd to avoid having a car stuck in your boot. 1st to 3rd isn't really the same. I really hate to have to set off now as i'm so concious of it crunching into second which obviously isn't doing any good at all. Gotta take the car in this saturday so I will get them to check it and see what they think.

It really annoys me because I have no confidence to accelerate quickly in first then change to second because I know what will happen, not only is it not great for the car it makes you look like a tool.

Yeah it doesn't quite have the same effect when you blast off the line then 300 yards down the road you are parked up with your hazards on.

It's got to be one of the worst noises in motoring, I think it's the only noise that when I hear it I actually wince.

Hearing the spokes of your alloy grind against a 6" high kerbstone comes pretty close I reckon :)
