Coolant type. 2.0 tdi

I am about to embark on changing the heater matrix on my 2014 FR 2.0tdi 150. I have read a lot now but the only thing I need confirmation on is the coolant / antifreeze type I need to use. Some say G13, some say G12 evo, some even say G12. So what should I be using?

Whilst the coolant is drained, I would recommend changing the header tank too, to get rid of the silica bag. Available on ebay for less than £15, and only 5-10 mins tops to change when the coolant has been drained

Thanks all, I have ordered an expansion tank as for £15 it seemed pointless trying to remove the bag.

I found my existing pressure relief cap was weak - let go at something like half its rated pressure - so 'while you're at it' I would measure your existing cap pressure relief to check.

Simple while you have the tank off - just block off the spare ports and connect a bicycle/car tyre pump & gauge to one port.
I think they are normally 1.6bar - 23psi.

I have a pressure tester so will check that after the repair.

Remove the bag of beads in the coolant header tank (if you can, or get a new header tank without - the bags when old can burst blocking the heater matrix.. might have already done so).

When I replaced my heater matrix I fished out the bag of beads and refilled with G12evo from eurocarparts which has the additive that the beads used to provide.


edit: seems like you're getting a new header tank so that covers my comment above! Good luck with the change.

Well after waiting ages for the expansion tank to turn up, I swapped it all out this morning. 3 hours all in which included making and drinking 2 cups of tea :D. I used this Video as a guide


It was pretty much spot on, only bit it didn't really cover was removing the glove box, which apart from a bunch of screws and too many cables was pretty easy. Best tip I can give is to cover the floor with a dustbin liner and put some towels or rags on to of that to soak up the spilt coolant.
