Used to own a 172 and can confirm that it has the horses but not the torque (147lb ft@5400 !!!!).

Great handling but kept getting left behind when on motorways (especially with leon cupra and R's). Hence the reason why I had to buy a cupra.

Can someone pull up this guy who reckons his Clio when floored will do 34MPG.

The guy seems a bit of an amatuer. My fiance drives a 182 and whilst it does have bags more power on paper than mine id prob choose to take my car everyday. The power kicks in a lot lower down the range in mine and shifting from one car to the other I dont feel too much of a difference. Driving hers at 5-6k revs brings big smiles but you can see the gauge dropping before your very eyes. Her fuel economy isnt too bad but only because she drives it sensibly every day, shame:whistle:

As a 182 owner, I feel I should defend it somewhat :D

First off, I admit yes the diesels are quick. However, I dont think even a remapped TDI 130 / 150 is really any quicker in a straight line. At best, I would say they would be fairly equal, in all honesty TBH.

As for fuel consumption, the Clio has been better than I expected - although I do find meggermans claim of 34 MPG even when thrashing his cup a little OTT, but I get about 29-30 and I thrash my 182. When thrashing the diesel, it wasnt really that much better IMO (I owned a Fabia vRS as some of you will know).

Not to mention his brother has a chipped vRS and he says his Cup is still quicker, and his brother has backed this up too.

But at the end of the day we all like different things from our cars.

I've driven the Ibiza Cupra 1.8T and felt that the diesel engine would be better. However, diesel engine or not, I also felt the Clio was far more exciting and fun to drive, with far superior handling. As standard the 1.8T may well have been about as quick, but it really didnt feel it.

I sometimes wish people could see past the usual pub talk of 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. Face facts people, you wouldnt get past a properly driven RS Clio on a straight with just a chipped diesel. You will keep up, but the reality is, there isnt much difference at all in performance. However, find a bendy road and you will have to work VERY hard to keep up.

I'm sure we all enjoy our cars regardless though, and I am not gonna slag them off as I had a lot of fun in mine (vRS), but you have to admit the Clio is also a good (and quite quick) hot hatch straight out of the box. I for one, wouldnt go back.

a clio cup would deffo beat a remped VRs no doubt! esp when you throw in some bends/corners 180max/1300kg
(no i don't believe 130pdvrs can get 195 with just a cupra intake and a jabba map)

a remapped ibiza cupra 200/1175kg and twice the torque would cause a 182 real difficulty. but 1/4mile would be similar and 0-60

a leon cupra tdi remapped 195/1325kg would be a slower 1/4 mile and 0-60 (not by too much) expect for midrange punch where the leon would come into its own.

the two above would prob not be as fast around tight bend etc as the clio cup.

but as said it come down to driver sometimes.

yup.. its all about the drivers ability, especially when it comes down to a few tenths of a second here... and a few there...

Agreed, theres not going to be much in it really on the road. You need a huge amount of extra power to significantly pull away from any of these cars.

And although the Clio handled a lot better than say, the vRS, the latter could still be hustled around quickly with good technique.

Sometimes I long for better build quality (which is why i tried an ibiza, among other things in the first place), but I realised that I just like the car, which is why i still have it, although i must admit to waking up each morning wondering whether it will start or what part will fall off
