Catastrophic engine failure

So my mrs rang to say the car had stalled and would not start so I went to have a look the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree and sure enough it would not start so I had to tow her to the garage

To cut a long story short the garage rang to say the car had suffered catastrophic engine failure due to the cam pulley exploding and it would now require a full engine rebuild the list of parts it needs is as long as my arm.

Luckily it’s covered by the warranty

After searching online I’ve found a few others with a similar problem

Has anyone on here any experience of this?

Is it time to get rid of the car?

By the way the mrs drives like a pensioner on a Sunday so it’s not as if the car has been hammered

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Did the tensioner fail? The tensioner is a weak point of the tsi engines, it's undergone several revisions (3 I think) over the years. The latest of which is supposed to be more reliable. When you do have it back, how much warranty would be left on it? I think regardless it'd be worth keeping till the warranty was up. Depends on if you feel you can trust the car again or if this was too much and you've lost confidence in it. Nothing worse than driving a car waiting for it to break down again. Also, it'd be nothing to do with the way it was driven, it's just one of those unfortunates.

They said it was the pulley but I have read about the tensioner so it’s probably that what failed.

The warranty runs out in April so I’ll probably see how it goes until then
The mrs loves the car but I’m worried what’s going to happen to it after the warranty runs out

I seem to remember a post on this forum some time ago with the same problem and with some pictures from a VW forum I think showing the damage caused.

Surely the rebuild must come with a warranty of its own. Strangely I was just looking at engine rebuilds for my car (don't ask). And the rebuild carries a 1 year warranty which can be extended to 2 years for £500. I think it'd be worth asking them the question, maybe you can agree something with them.

Same thing happened to my Ibiza fr could of years ago. It felt like a big metallic thud when it happened to mine. Got the engine rebuilt under warranty and then sold it on. Couldn't afford that sort of **** to happen again.

I thought the tensioner issue was sorted out years ago? Scary stuff.

I’ve got this same engine and been for a hard blast today. Not filling me with confidence reading this post... on the plus side, I’ve just had a new timing belt and tensioners so hopefully they have used the new revesion.

I assume the tensioner pulley failed? I've never seen a cam pulley fall apart, but I guess anything's possible.
It's a good warning to listen for any untoward noises coming from the cam drive area.
