Car Storage - Covers any good?

I have been thinking of how I can preserve the FVRS when it is retired and big turboed next year. The plan had always been to have a garage on out house extension, however, SWMBO has decreed that we are now having a utility and extra living space

Can anyone suggest long term options for storing a second car? We have enough space for 4 cars on the drive - so room is no issue. However, weathering, paintwork fade and all the damage the elements would inflict would make any long-term project less enjoyable and practical.

Are car covers any good? I have seen breathable ones advertised before, fleecy lined ones which don’t rub paint etc. etc. Would a good outdoor cover be an option?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Get one that sits above and doesn't touch the car - I had a breathable one on the coupe (I didn't care about it...) and it scratched the hell out of the paint. I've seen a fleecy one do the same, as despite best efforts for the car to be clean, it still moved & scratched it up a bit.

Just food for thought, just because it's not being driven, doesn't mean you can't wash it? and assuming it'll be out in the elements 'normally' the paint can't have faded that badly?

The paint hasnt faded at all yet.

The concern is that if the motor is sat for long periods the elements will eventually take their toll. I'm thinking of the car as a long-term thing - over the next few years, and would like to show it in the summers. I'm trying to think of the best wey to preserve it. Its not just the paint i'm concerned will suffer from the sun, its the seals, dash and leather interior also.

The car gets a good wash every week, and a proper wash, polish and wax every other month.

When you say covers that dont sit on the car but above - how do you mean?
