I had both front ones snap on my old one, replaced with Koni lowereing springs, which made the ride hard as hell. The reason I did it was because I could get these local on the day so that's what I went for.
I have just had both front top mount replaced as I noticed one was leaning back in the seat, seems it has had a top mount on one side before and they had put it back together incorrectly and all of the force of the strut had been smashing the bearing to bits. I had to have the top spring seat hammered back into shape as well. You cant tell the strut isnt working correctly but the spring will be doing more work, it would pass an MOT as it is.

Mechanic said that no because of this the shock is now knackered on that side and the piston slides back in on its own, probably due to the angle the strut has been on. I bought mounts from Volksbits on ebay for £14 the pair including bearings and £60 to fit them.

As the car has done 103k miles I am going to have to replace at least both front struts, Bilstein ones from Eurocarparts are £37 each. I think due to the age and mileage I should change the springs too and they are £42 each I think.

We can all see where this is heading, coilovers are now the cheaper option, along with a TT from Anti roll bar which goes under the drive shaft, and some new drop links. Just need to get saving for the parts

possible spring broken

Hi Guys,

Urgently need your help. I've just done a 60 mile trip and around 55 miles in on the motorway I went over a little dip and noticed on the passenger front wheel side a clunck or spring being released. I was on the motorway for a few miles more and noticed no further noise or driving issues. However as I came of the motorway and 5 miles further as I came to park my car turning left there was a lot of noise coming from the passenger's side something akin to metal cluncking to a grinding noise. I quickly spoke to two mechanics who I normally use and explained the symptoms. One reckoned it could be drive shaft or cv joint and the other reckoned it could be the spring since he did not reckon the drive shaft or cv joint will suddenly go.

Nevertheless, my main concern is getting back to take the car to either of these guys and with the symptoms and likely problems above am I able to drive this home 60 miles without breaking down?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
