Going back to the issue of airbag costs...

When I first bought my Ibiza, the airbag light came on.
In the end, they kept the car for 3 weeks - ordering new parts, fitting them, not fixing the fault, ordering more parts, etc etc. It was all under warranty but I remember seeing some prices of the airbags, pretensioner igniters and airbag ECUs etc, and was quite shocked how much they all were.

They told me that if an airbag or pretensioner is triggered, then that not only kills the airbag or pretensioner itself, but the airbag ECU as well....

With regards to the £60 charge, I accept they do need to charge for their time - BUT they should warn you of all costs beforehand.
I'd go and have a word with the manager, say all you wanted was a quote and at no time were you told you'd be charged, tell him you don't want to pay, see what they say.

Ive never been charged for a quote, at the end of the day if their quote is reasonable then they have no reason to be worried you may take the information elsewhere to get it done cheaper?

They should definately tell you that there will be a charge before they carry out anything.

I produce quote and proposals all the time, and although in a different industry never charge for them in advance, if your quote is competative enough you will win the business.

Exactly, I work in IT and we submit proposals for work all the time, a lot of which take up a lot of man hours, we don't charge for these, it's all part of getting work.

I collected my car at lunch, had a word with the manager and paid nothing.

My seat garage does free estimates...

I would say its in a garage's interest to do so.
