Getting all the parts ready for my timing belt change on my EA288 TDI 184 - and my new genuine water pump arrived today.
Looks spot on - but when you spin the pulley you can hear a feint plastic scrapping noise.
Just wondering if anyone has pick up one of these and spun it in your hand - was it quiet or could you hear a similar noise?

Don't know if its 'designed like that' or faulty?

Can't comment specifically on the noise but those electronic water pumps are prone to failure and a lot of suppliers have stopped using them. The electronic actuator sticks and causing overheating problems. Mine failed and TPS gave my mechanic the option of one with or without and I went without. Not had an issue since.

Yes, I noticed a lot of OE number supersessions to the 'N' which is the latest which is the one I ordered. Went from 04L121011 - 04L121011E - L - P - 04L121011N so I was 'hoping' the later numbers have an update that made them more reliable!
It does have quite a strong return spring.
So i'm happy fitting an electro/mechanic pump - just this noise seems strange.
I'm used to rubber type bearing seals which are silent - I don't what sort of seal these pumps use?

I can't comment on the various versions, so like you say, hopefully yours is good to go. I just choose to go without on my new one.

Also don't know about the seals, so I've expended my limited knowledge!

Let us know how you get on with it.

I've had it confirmed by two different sources that this noise is normal for a brand new electro/mechanical pump.
They use the coolant as a lubricant so that would stop the noise.

Thinking out loud!
I bet the failures of these electro/mechanical pump mechanism is caused by the silica floating around in the coolant system (that blocks up the heater matrix) blocking up the shroud mechanism!
