Best tyres to reduce road noise?

Hello All,
Just wondering if anyone has seen a reduction in road noise with different tyres? I'm on 17inch 225/45 Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 on all 4 which for the most part are noisy but bearable until you hit a rough bit of road and it becomes horrendously noisy regardless of the speed! Even considering going down to 16's if it will make a decent difference?!?
Many thanks

As manufactures have made sound insulation so much better its highlighted road/tire noise, you won't notice any difference in noise by going down to a 16", presuming they fit over the calipers. Unfortunately you will just have to try different brands until you find one that suits, I suspect a less sport orientated tyre may suit with soft walls like Mich., Conti or Toyo..

Whatever brand you end up with, also consider choosing 205/50-tires for less noise and slightly comfortable ride.

I'm assuming you mean you could put 205/50 R17? tyres on the rims meant for 225/45 R17s?

Or take the size down, which for the Leon is 205/55 R16.

I actually have 4 winter tyres on steel wheels 205/55 R16 they fit over my calipers fine. Definitely bit smoother than the 17inch Dunlop not sure they are any quieter but little wonder they are full winter tread.

Will have to experiment with a less sporty summer tyre I guess. Any revelations i will post!

Thanks All

Fitted Sailun Atrezzo Z4 all season tyres to my wife's Leon FR184 to replace the factory-fitted ones. Went from noisy, rumbling tram-lining to quiet (as quiet as a 225/40/18s can really be), fun and confident. Most of our driving is on wet Scottish A and B roads, so it's made a definitely improvement to the car. The factory tyres were so bad, you couldn't hear the engine.

Wasn't a unknown choice because I had previously had them on my A6 S-Line Avant before and recently put them on my Alhambra.
