"how about a nice V6 Golf 4-motion for say 8k then 2k on an R32 bodykit and spray, then the other 2 on wheels and an AMD remap and milltek exhaust.

R32 looky likey but got to love that sound."

I have to agree - that's a great idea

They do sound very nice but they are not a performance car, they are pretty poor. But swings and roundabouts.

i think if i could have afforded an s3 i would have gone for one over the ibiza, 4 wheel drive is a big bonus for getting the power down, would be fun to get the ibiza ihi'd tho even tho it would be hard using the available power and getting the power down, i think if i was you id get an s3 and get it remaped that would be quick around 260 bhp if i remember although its not all about bhp feel the torque lol

Is this Andy_T4 of CNW fame? :)

I'd have to agree with the majority, i'd buy an S3, tidy looking one if poss (nice set of wheels etc) and then spend a little on suspension, remap etc. That'd see you with 260-280bhp, and a pretty quick car.

I love my Ibiza, but as people have said, it's not the same kind of car. The dash rattles etc, but it's such a hoot to drive. :D And that's with just a remap, one that's 250+ must be a scream! All depends what you're after mate. :)

Totally agree, yeah they sound 'ok' but are not quick, the weight and the 4wd see's to that, infact, I don't see the point of them, they sup juice for england, dont handle, aren't quick..... there's no improvement over a 180bhp 1.8T Golf, or even the Pd150's.......

Hey Martin! I'm not sure fame's the right word but yep, it's l'il old me! ;)

This topic's really given me some things to think about! I read a few posts and think "Yup, the Ibiza's the one", then read a few more and decide that the S3 is the way to go! I'm quite surprised at the lack of loyalty Ibiza owners show towards their own car. If you posted on CGTI and asked whether to buy a Mk3/Mk2/Mk1 Golf, the owners would normally rave on about their own model and dis the others. Not sure whether that says something about the Ibiza, or just shows that SCN forum users are more objective!

I was surprised at the low quarter mile times being stated for S3's. A friend had one with just an exhaust & Revo and was pulling mid 13's when we went to Avon Park. Maybe his was just running better, or maybe he's just better at launching it on boost. He's got a Haldex controller on his new one to put permanent power to the back wheels, so I expect he'll be even quicker off the line now!

Thanks to everyone who has posted in reply to my question, and for all the alternative suggestions. I think it's time to do a bit of test-driving and work out which car suits me the best! I'll post up whichever car I get on here!

its nothing to do with a lack of loyalty mate...i love my car dearly...its really the best car anyone in my house hold has owned and we've had escorts of all years, a 206, couple 306s, 307, a saxo, rover 25GTi, couple astras and currently the ibiza, a kia sorrento 4x4 and a nissan almera

but u paired it against a car in a class above...the S3 has the same features but a more modern design with a classier badge and supposed better build quality....and it has the same engine wit a bigger turbo with 4wd

i would say put it down to an age thing as the ibizas abit boy racer esq, but there are some ibiza owners that are twice my age

so it actually comes down to money... do u want an outright car or do u want a smaller car with a big heart that u can put a few quid into to make it abit more special

but sticking over 5k into a mk3 ibiza is beyond insane...its just plain idiotic imo

that said iv spent about 2.5 or close to 3 grand on mine and its full of stone chips and rattles...,builds character

dont need to mate, cars like that go up for sale more times than i get pissed, and they never get the asking price

honestly puttin 5k into a 5k ibiza is like buyin a house just to burn it down....quite funny and gives u a warm feeling, but afterwards u start to think it werent the best of ideas

would rather a car thats worth 10k any day of the week
baring in mind of course that some cupras are still going for 7/8k at garages in standard form

never worth more than 7 though now

Thats poo! If you burnt a house down, you wouldnt have a house! If you spent 5k on a 5k car, you'd probably have a car worth 6-7k, but thats pretty fekkin rapid, and could embaress other so called sports cars!

Metaphore : the application of a word or phrase to somebody or something that is not meant literally but to make a comparison, for example saying that somebody is a snake

LMAO! Nice 1 :)
I don't see this problem with spending money on a car that you won't get back. As I said earlier on, I see it as a hobby and the money you spend on the car is no different to the money you spend to enjoy most other hobbies. For example, if playing Golf is your thing, you pay club membership fees annually, buy clubs, clothes, shoes, etc - you don't get the fees back at the end of the year, the clothes are worthless 2nd hand, and you'll lose money on the clubs!

It all comes down to whether you're happy driving a car that's the same as every other one of that model to come out of the factory, or if you want to make it individual.

I borrowed a mate's rattly old 20 year old 20vT converted Mk2 Golf to go to work in last Monday. Things do go wrong with it regularly, but it was such a buzz making new supposed sports cars that cost £20-£30k more look silly :)

yeah but when a golf club breaks its cheap to replace the part :D

when something ****s up on an ibiza, its very rarely cheap

nah i see wot ur saying...if u can live with the inconsistancies of the car and still spend money on it then theres no problem as long as u dont expect to get it back

but at the end of the day...it depends wot ya 'thing' is...wanting to drive a stylish car, a fast car, a great handling car...imo the ibiza is average in each category and obviously the mor money u throw at it the better it becomes....

Fair point. Naming no names, but I did chat to someone pretty influential in the world of tuning Seats a few months back, who'd driven an Evo after spending more than the cost of 2 Evo's making an Ibiza go faster and handle better. He said that he'd spent all that money on the Ibiza, yet the Evo handled better out of the box!
