Another rubbing sound thread

I'm getting a rhythmic rubbing sound as the wheels go round when cornering on about half steering lock. I'm still trying to work out if its related to the brakes. I had a sound coming from the left side so took the wheel off and fiddled with the anti-rattle spring on the caliper and it *seems* better.

But I can hear this sound inside the car, Im not sure from which side. It just sounds like a creaking/rubbing sound and seems to go as I straighten the wheel up or pick up some speed. Also noticed I get a bang when going over bumps at highish speed which could be related? It doesn't seem to always happen.

I haven't got coilovers or anything, any ideas what this could be? Loads of things come up on the search but any pointers would be appreciated :)

Any ideas guys? I have the wheels off and had a look..can't see anything obvious. The discs turn without making a rubbing noise after pressing the brake pedal. Can't test it any other way.

Couldn't see any splits on drive shaft boot.
Car isn't lowered so wouldn't expect tyre to rub.
Doesn't sound anything like a stone.

Im thinking a stuck caliper piston

Can't get the pads out at the moment as I broke my hex key thing so will have to get a new one and take a look at the weekend. Spray a load of brake cleaner in or something.

Could be one of your CV joints on the way out, but if thats the case you may as well wait til it gets louder before worrying about it.

Wheel bearings? Jack it up and wobble each wheel.

Today I took the wheel off and removed the pads, checked for any debris, cleaned the back of the pads and applied copper grease and put it all back together. Went out for a drive and I had a different but much worse noise. Just sounded like metal rubbing metal each time the wheel goes round constantly when driving except when I apply the brakes.

So came home, jacked it all up again. removed pads, caliper and disc. Cleaned out the caliper loads with a toothbrush, kitchen towels and brake cleaner, sanded down the hub and mounting face of disc applied some more copper grease to where the sides of the pads touch the caliper. Put it all back together and I still have the sound, in fact it seems worse.

I can't hear it when I jack the wheel up and turn it, only when im driving so I'm totally lost as to what it is. I think I may need new AP calipers

I had the same noise on my old megane, then after about a month, it developed into a knocking and the driveshaft was knackard. Not expensive to fix even on a crappy french car. Just another possibility

This is a bit weird, ever since i changed my pads and discs i "think" i can hear a strange noise, the car brakes fine but the noise is still there. Maybe its my imagination

I think my problem might be something to do with the Ferodo DS2500 pads. They don't seem to quite fit the calipers properly as they stick out the bottom a few mm.

I hope my discs aren't warped after 1000 miles or so! But I am tempted to just replace the whole lot (discs and pads again).

Just noticed this morning I have squeeky brakes again. Have already stripped them down, cleaned and re-copper greased them twice

Could air in the brake system contribute to the problem? They haven't been bled for a year and a half.

I doubt it'll be the Ferodo's. I had them on last time and i'm back to the AP's now (3rd set of pads). Also i doubt the discs would be warped especially if they are a decent make and you haven't been abusing them too much. My rears are my biggest problem i got a cheap set of discs and pads thrown on and they knock all the time when braking, i'm going to change them for OEM ones next month i think.

The discs were just standard EBC discs but even so, they shouldnt be warped. I changed me rear ones and they all seem fine.

So only other thing is that my calipers/pistons are knackered. I don't fancy re-furbing them tho!

hmm..I dont think I would have mullered them, but it is possible I suppose. Shame I can't just replace the discs without the pads really.

I have ferodo pads and got a very loud squeak after about 2k use which disappeared when i touched the brakes despite me putting plenty of copper grease on when i fitted them.

took them apart and found the pads were VERY tight(almost welded) in the carriers so i filed a fraction off the pads where they slot into the carriers to allow a nice smooth movement re greased and its been ok for a month now.
