Dont compare kwik-fit to Halford.
kwik-fit has the proper equipment and won't charge you if you have a leak and its now £49.00 + you can all so have it cleaned to get rid of smells and bacteria for another £20.00 £69.00 all in but this is about the same as anywhere else but dont have to book it in.
Halfords uses an aerosol and its about the same price.

The cleaning anti-bacterial aerosol comes free with a Halfords DIY kit too. Don't get me wrong I've seen it alot cheaper than the £12 Halfords charge for it, but it's not a bad deal if your going to go down the DIY route.

I think going to kwik fit and not having to pay if it turns out that regassing doesn't fix the problem is the best option really, else you could end up out of pocket!

My air con is working fine but there is a bit of a stink out of it when it first comes on. Anyone know what this is or how it can be fixed?

My air con problem has now been fixed by a local guy, it was the pressure switch leaking, £110 all in with the re-gas, just waiting for the sunshine again now!!

If anyone is within range of Midland VW, they're also within range of the place that did mine. Just down the A460, about half a mile south of the M6, there is Featherstone tyres on the right. They do a full discharge, pressure test and regas for £30. I had mine done late last year and it made a huge difference. It took about an hour, all they do is hook the machine up, program in the amount required and walk away.

The price may have gone up slightly from last year, but I was very happy with the service. I'm expecting to go back there next time I need some tyres.

They wont be able to do that shortly.

As of 4th July this year it will be illegal to regas a R134a system if you suspect it has a leak and will be illegal for anyone to work on the system unless they are IMI approved. 100k fine at stake as well if caught breaking the law.

So if the air con isnt working, you cant just have an air con service done. It needs to be diagnosed. Cars now can only loose a maximum of 40g or refridgerant per year through natural wasteage. So if you know your system holds 525g then its a long time before its empty or low.

not just R134a
and dont forget next year thats banned as well and will be changing to something else.

im lucky i can get mine done at work foc :)

Well dealer charged me £77.55 to have a look and found that the compressor is dead (middle part of compressor not spining) so they have said it will be £1089.04 to fix. Car now back home and I am driving around with the window open.
Awaiting quote from local garage which will hopefully be a sensible price.

I can't see how your compressor can be dead if you've just had it re-gassed at Kwik-Fit, as the compressor has to be functioning to be able to re-gas the system.

You definately need a second opinion!

Second opinion has agreed compressor needs replacing. But Seat customer service have come back and offerd to pay 50% which makes it the same price as the local garage. Waiting for them to source a compressor as known in UK.

They are on b/o at the moment.

And you can regas a system with a knackered compressor.

If the coupling has failed its ok, new compressor and dryer and your away. If its destroyed itself internally you must flush the system or the new compressor will last days if that.
