My aircon has stopped being cold suspect that it needs regass. It's 3 years old and never been looked at.
Saw in Halfords that you can buy a can to do it yourself for about £50 has anyone tried this or is it best to find someone to leak teat and regass.
Any ideas how much this would cost?
Thanks

They wont be able to do that shortly.

As of 4th July this year it will be illegal to regas a R134a system if you suspect it has a leak and will be illegal for anyone to work on the system unless they are IMI approved. 100k fine at stake as well if caught breaking the law.

So if the air con isnt working, you cant just have an air con service done. It needs to be diagnosed. Cars now can only loose a maximum of 40g or refridgerant per year through natural wasteage. So if you know your system holds 525g then its a long time before its empty or low.

Don't use the "top-up" cans, they are a bad idea. Your system is designed to work with a specific amount of gas in it; there's usually a label under the bonnet with the capacity. As you have no way of knowing how much is still in it, you can easily end up over-charging it and blow a seal.

The only correct way to regas a system is to remove the remaining gas, vacuum the system and recharge with the correct amount of gas and top-up the lubricant oil.

By the way, as of July 4th, those top-up cans will be banned, as anyone handling refrigerant gas must have a relevant qualification.

techie - you beat me to it!

It's not that you can't get it regassed, just that you won't be able to buy a do-it-yourself kit.

My 07 cupra's air con/climate has stopped blowing cold (still blows hot), so I had it regassed at a local garage which did not solve the problem, typical really has it's just three months out of warranty! Gonna take it into the stealers next week and see if I can get them to sort it, just wondering what it could be, the compressor or a sensor maybe??

If it's has been successfully regassed then the compressor should be functioning, so, if you are not getting cold air then the vents flaps in the dash controlled by the climate control system which control the flow of cold or hot air may not be operating and are stuck on hot, or half way between?

The guy at the garage said the compressor was turning even when the climate control was set to off, I'm sure I read somewhere these are controlled with a clutch system and always run at something like 10% to stop failures?? I'm thinking maybe faulty climate controls or sensor, bet it ain't cheap!!

Had my Mk1 done at kwik-fit. To be fair they done good job. cleaned the old remaining gas out done a leak check and re-gassed the system. World of difference.

Took about an hour and cost about £45 if I remember.
