Generaly Most will not recomend open air filters due to sucking in the hot engine air.
I fitted a Carbon BMC filter to mine, of which i would highly recomend.

A modified box would be superb with a high-intake cone. Alternatively, running a cold air-feed to an open cone may work.

But as Andi mentioned, heat is a major problem. The colder the air, the denser it is. The denser the air, the more powerful the combustion cycle.

Out of interest, for what reason do you want an open filter?

to be perfectly honest its not for me, its for a mate whos has the leon cupra r, and he was considering getting the k&n 57i kit but wasnt sure on what to get, i think he is also looking for a greater induction noise, and has been told he would get this with an open cone, but was wondering what kind of induction noise you will get with a bmc carbon filter, but i just wanted to find out everyones opinion for him and the advantages and dis-advantages.

Well, would he prefer the roary induction noise or the 3-6BHP they're "supposedly" able to provide? If its performance over noise, he'd need to take heat into account.

Avoid K+N if possible. Only because there are hundreds of success stories with other brands, some of which are cheaper. Try the modifications section of the forum for more info. I'd rate greencotton, personally.

i have a dynatwist with 3 inch feed takin air from down in front of the intercooler.it sounds the dogs swingers and if you want it a bit louder you can take the pipe off leavin the enclosed cone on its own.this wont draw in hot air robbing you of torque like the k and n kit i had on did.

neuspeed p-flo is one of the best for bhp and torque (albeit minimial gains), but has the noise (for the 225 audi tt, which i presume should fit)

there seems to be some mixed opinion on filters as firstly if you use an oily aftermarket filter it can knacker your MAF sensor.

I used a Dynatwist filter and didn't suffer any issues, and as per the post above, the Carbon BMC one works well to. J@mes on this site was using a modified (smoothed) standard airbox with aftermarket panel filter and 100mm ducting into the box, and ZBOYD I think was using a K&N panel filter without any issues. Any of the above are acceptable depending on the sound you want. If you use a closed cone filter with a very short intake pipe you can get quite a decent induction roar.

Any idea what the budget is?

That's been proven incorrect time and time again, it's one of those urban legends I think that never goes away. The only way oil can damage your MAF is if you seriously over-oil it, or if you don't let the oil soak in properly before putting the filter in and driving.

K&N have a big bit on their website (as do other manufacturers I think) with their answer to this legend, explaining why it's not true.

I'm yet to here of anybody that has suffered these problems and can guarantee it was the oil from a correctly maintained filter that caused it. We all know how prone MAF's are to failure, it's not like they need an excuse to break! ;)

well he's been out and purchased the k&n 57i it looks like a decent piece of kit but is yet to be fitted and wont be for a while, as someone in a picasso was kind enough to attempt a U-turn without indicating or looking and went straight into him. :(

your mate got mugged, im sorry it is a lovely put together kit but its just a JR cone filter, stainless heat shield with some beeding on it too remove the sharp edge and a s/s adaptor to allow fitment of a breather filter to the secondary air pump hose, damn thats alot of cash for what it is!
