ABS Pump - MOT Failure

Hi there,

A friend has a 53 plate 1.4 Ibiza and its recently failed the MOT due to what the mechanic says is a faulty ABS Pump. I think the only symptom was the ABS light being on.

What are these like to change? I've found a pump on ebay but not sure if its the correct one. How can i find out what one it needs?

Thanks

Its part of the MOT test, they check the ABS light comes on with the ignition, but it must then go out to show its operating free of fault.

Did they definately check its the pump? or just the usual MOT failure 'list the first thing they find on the system'?

You need to get someone to plug into the car and see what fault codes you have really.
It might be a wheel sensor for example, much cheaper than a pump.

Dont go guessing, it will potentially cost you lots

Remove bulb..

as stated earlier, part of the test is to check the ABS light comes on with the ignition, then goes out. Removing bulb is something they are well aware of.
If ABS is fitted, they must see its working by an ABS light that comes on then goes out.

If you remove bulb you might get it through if they are blind and dont see the ABS system. However as the car has already failed for an ABS fault they know its got ABS fitted.

Fair point, I'd think it's more likely a sensor than the pump.

Cheers fellas will have to get it on a machine then.

Probably a case of the mechanic trying his luck with a big bill!

If worst come to the worst and it is the pump. What are they like to change?

Manufacturers are adopting LEDs as oppose to conventional bulbs in dash clusters which prevent you from just removing or re-wiring the light.

Obvious fail on the MOT if the lights not there but the pump is.

It's worth noting that if it's the fault "V64 abs mechanical pump failure" then it's almost certainly the main power fuse on the battery cover that's got a crack in it, normally a 40amp - replace with a 50amp and you'll never have the fault again.

That or a sensor.

Ok got a bit further with this.

Had the car on diagnosed at the local garage. Error code 00301 - ABS Return Flow Pump

Checked the 40a Fuse under the battery cover. Cracked! Changed it for a like for like but the light is still on?

Will it need to be reset by a machine or should have gone out and theres something else a miss?
