I'm not normally this geeky but had to share this - I managed to get 38.5MPG from my FR TFSI between Birmingham Airport and Cheltenham last night (about 60 miles) - I thought I was seeing things - makes up for the 23MPG on the way there - LOL

Yeah I think it is a little more down hill on the way back; two other differences - I travelled to Birmingham at 4.30am... and travelled back in rush hour so was travelling between 50 & 70 mph on the way home. I wasn't trying to "granny" it either, especially when I'm not paying the fuel!

I think I managed 35MPG on a B road in Cornwall where I could only get to about 30MPH.

Yeah I was thinking the same - either that or the trip computer was having a funny moment!!
Tbh the economy is getting better with more miles, I have now covered just over 9000 miles.
Make no mistake thou, economy is not that important to me - I didn't buy a 2 litre turbo expecting high mpg, my point is the 2.0 TFSI is a very impressive engine - I have no regrets switching from a 1.9 TDI 150 to the 2.0 TFSI.

I agree, you cant expect performance and economy. The FR is a great car. I usually get bored of cars but at the moment I can't think of anything around that price I would change it for.
Do you run it on optimax or something similar?
Yeah I try to use Optimax (the Shell one!) where ever possible. I know some people say that the effect of Optimax and similar fuels is a placebo but I disagree - in the TFSI you can definitely tell/feel the differences, in terms of response, power & economy.
I know we'll get a kicking but I agree about the petrol. I only try to use Optimax but the wife had to put a £5 worth of supermarket stuff in and it did seem a little less responsive.
I am not sure if it make a difference to the economy though but I haven't run any other fuel anyway. (May be it does because there's less weight in my wallet after refilling)
41.5? Wow - I think that is the best anyone will get unless it is put on the back of a transporter!!
so not only did you have to rub in the mpg but the stage 2 as well. talk about kick a man while he's down.....

I have had 40 mpg from my standard FR TFSI on a trip of around 100 miles i couldn't believe my eyes. I also nearly had 350 miles to a tank of fuel and it wasn't in the red either.
I've had 40+mpg a couple of times and once I had 403 miles to the tank all motorway mind you. Usually run in on SU when I can get it.
I did a 100mile trip the other day (A52 towards skeg - one of the worst roads for going sloooowww) and got 38.5MPG - TFSI Stage 2 also Dont think I will be doing it again mind you

(Having owned a few diesels I can get away with saying that) Its all horses for courses etc - loved the economy of my TDI 150 when it was important, hated the rev counter not going much beyond 4500RPM.
I sense a petrol vs diesel arguement brewing.... 
Simple answer is what would you prefer to have out of the two if running costs weren't an issue?! (although clearly if you were in that position you'd be able to afford a Ferrari or Aston Martin etc)
