1.6TDI v 1.9TDI......Which do i buy???

Hi guys, sorry for this as a 1st post but im in a bit of a panic..........i have to make my mind up by Monday to which od the above engines i want in my next car!! Choices are

2010 Leon Emocion S 1.9TDI, 5000 miles, Black
2010 Lean Emocion S 1.6TDI, 12000 miles, Nimbus Grey or Red (Metallic)

Now, the 1.9 can be sold to me for £750 less!!

So, without starting a 1.6 v 1.9 war i'd like to know your views on why the 1.6 is so much more expensive?.......or why the 1.9 is better as the case may be!

I know of the lower tax bracket of the 1.6 & i'm also aware that its quoted MPG figures are somewhat optimistic!

Now i know we dont have crysttal balls but will the 1.9's book value plummet in the near future??

Jeez im even more confused after writing this!!

 Well thats a bit of a combo!!, the Nimbus Grey is a 1.6!!

I should have said, this is a sensible choice question, not 'im gonna tune the nuts off it so which is better?' Its future desirability & resale im thinking of

Thanks though, keep opinions coming!!

Sorry, thicko moment.

Still the 1.9

We have just got a 1.6 Leon, and the economy is far from ideal.

Hmmmmm.....interesting reading this!

Literally JUST back from taking the 2 for a drive & on a steady 60mph run the 1.6 got 64mpg & the 1.9 done 62.5mpg

At 80 mph the 1.6 returned 40.5mpg & the 1.9 got 38.5mpg (all figs got with a reset on the move)

So we had settled on the 1.6TDi CR with being quieter & less to tax............but now i've got home & read this! lol

The 1.9 definately had more 'guts' down low though.........this is definately swings & roundabouts! However, the 1.9 is great now as its only just being phased out though in 3 or so years time will it still be seen as acceptable?, especially if Road Tax keeps going up. Personally i can see the book price of it going down faster than the 1.6 over the next few years, then again im certainly no expert!........& finally.......is it really worth £750 more??........and......then there's the DPF to worry about!

I think I'm correct in saying that the 1.9's MPG will improve as its run in. The 1.6 has more than double the mileage so maybe that's why it has a better consumption rate at the moment?

Hopefully someone can confirm this?

I see your point though the 1.9 that i actually drove had nearly 17k on it, the Black 1 that was on my options list will be arriving at the dealership on Monday or Tuesday so i couldnt drive it.

It really comes down to how you'll use the car and how long you're going to keep it?

Do lots of short journeys and the DPF will no doubt play a factor. Keep the car for a 'short' period and resale will also be a factor.

You've done the deal, so best not think of what you could of had. I still think about the 2.0TDI I turned down 4 years ago!

The 1.6 CR is probably the better buy in the long run. The CR engine is smoother and quieter overall and do seem much more reliable and less prone to DPF issues as they burn cleaner and produce less soot in the first place.

As long as you do the odd long run it will be fine not heard of any issues with the 1.6 CR lump. They are more economical just as you found off boost have les lower down due to being a smaller capacity.

I didn't even know you could get 1.9 TDI's in 2010, I thought it was only 1.6 and 2.0

MPG figures gained by resetting on the run are pointless. You don't ever set off and drive at 60mph all the way, and a good percentage of your time is spent getting up to 60 (or in traffic etc.). Real world the 1.9 is going to be more economical as the low end torque is what gets you moving, overtaking, and much more.

If you want a sorted car, better fuel economy, and a little less refinement then the 1.9 is the one. If you want to save a whale from extinction and contribute a little less carbon to the atmosphere (while paying extra for DPF related faults) then the 1.6 would be the one.

Thank you guys, the deal isn't complete yet........but i do need to let them know by monday lunch time. The vehicle will be used for long runs for about a year (30 miles or so per journey), then she will be changing jobs & will be closer to home & it will be my wife driving it & i think she wants the quietnss & smoothness although she liked both cars.

Glad you brought that up, the getting fuel figs on the move bit, i didnt test using the mpg from stationery as its hard to accelerate constantly in both vehicles to keep the test fair.

Lovin your 2nd paragraph , you're a real 1.6 fan aint ya!!:D

Horses for courses mate. I'm not a fan of small hard working engines, really. A larger engine doing less work is my preferred option. But overall, anything without a DPF is the best way forward in my view. :)

1.6CR all day long!

Torque and power are available over a much wider rev band, the difference in economy is negligible and from talking to a wide range of our customers most say the 1.6 is giving better economy, warm up is quicker which is a real boon in the winter, noise levels are miles apart, the difference in Road Fund Licence is going to get bigger not smaller as the Government hammers higher Co vehicles and re-sale value is always going to higher. No contest!

The 1.6 cr will no doubt have a DPF where as there's s possibility the 1.9 ( more than likely a PD engine) won't. That alone would make the decision for me.

Yeah, i gotta admit most things from the VAG are well built...............& this is coming from a Mitsubishi salesman!! lol

You guys gotta try the MPG on the Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 Diesel..........those things are doing serious MPG, much better than stated in mfr figures! My dad has just bought his 2nd one cos the 1st one is doing near 70mpg! V-tech Diesel 147bhp!
