They told me the figures were 1/2 a litre for every 600 miles (or maybe 1000km). Mine tested at 1/4 litre for that distance.

The two guys at SEAT, and the service manager at the dealer, have all been very pleasant to deal with, they just couldn't actually fix it. What I have got though is an acknowledgement that I have flagged the issue and that they wouldn't fix it. So in the future should it get worse then I have something to present to them, and they've said that it's the right thing to have done. I'll also start taking more notes of when I fill up and roughly what I'm putting in so I can tell them what I think the real world usage is.

I would still go for an emissions test at an MOT station.

no point in waiting till the MOT is due before you find out it wont pass.

Still issues with this engine? Tut tut! I traded my boc over a year ago and in that time had probs with oil, well documented on here. The hassles with consumption tests, then new piston rings then new engine really spoiled my ownership at the end.
I think if I could turn the clock back I think I would have just got free oil from dealer and just topped it up until I traded it in.
My son is waiting to take delivery of a new ibiza cupra in the next week or so. Hoping he has no oil probs but if he does it's easier just to top it up. Unless it's really bad!

It's a great little car which is being spoiled slightly by this issue. I guess I just need to put it out of my mind now, keep the oil topped up (£10 for 1000 miles worth? I can live with that I think.)

But I'm glad that SEAT at least acknowledge that I have complained about it. I'll try and get an emissions test at some point and see what that results in.

My 2011 Polo GTI (think it's a CAVE?) is on it's second engine (@ 21k) and still drinking 4 litres every 1000 miles or so. It's been like this from new and now has 26k on the clock.

VW Finance won't accept our rejection as we're 2 years into the contract and they say they've upheld their part of the deal by supplying the car and that the car is being repaired as and when required.

So with that I'm picking the Polo back up on Monday for another oil consumption test that will determine if they will fit Engine No.3.

Now, I've decided that there has to be a game to be played:

VW's appointed finance company refuse to release me from the contract and after all, why should they care? They don't pick up the tab for the warranty work and as long as our monthly payments are coming in they're not bothered.

VW customer services also aren't bothered and keep telling me that there is nothing they can do and it is up to their appointed finance company to release me as they are a separate company trading with VW's name.

So, as far as I can see the game now is - how long can I hold 7000 RPM on my daily commute!

After all, why should I care - my fuel is payed for through my employers, I've got a decent pair of earplugs and a newly learned lack of mechanical sympathy. At the end of the day it's not my car and it will be going back, by hook or by crook, well before it runs out of warranty.

Does anyone want to take bets on how many engines I can get through by this time next year? At £4000 a pop I reckon I could probably take out at least 20 grands worth?

Heck, maybe some pencil pusher at ma'dub will notice after the 4th engine goes south and they'll make the call to release me so I can run for the hills.

I really wish I hadn't got rid of my PD160 beezer - I miss it more than all of my dead pet's put together - best car I've ever had.

To be honest mate - I've no idea if they did put the newer CT** engine in. I know this time around they're not offering the crank case breather mod so I'm guessing its the newer one.

I've also had the new software on the ECU about 1000 miles ago and MPG and power (measured by bum-dyno) has suffered even on 98 RON. Although that could be psychosomatic!

Does anyone know if the MED17.5.5 has any way of them logging abuse?

My 61 plate cupra has just had a sotware update and the modified breather due to excessive oil usage.
Let's see how it goes from here !!!

had mine since September 2011 oil problem started 2000 miles after the car was bought on minimum delivery miles, the garage didn't want to know until i contacted head office they then tested the oil levels,as all of you have said got a new part put on an oil breather pipe possibly? still a problem done some research and they still failed to help me head office fobbed me off so had to get a third party to give them a kick up the arse all that was said is that the oil levels are slightly out of the normal range its still unacceptable I have found out that they had put fully synthetic oil in from, the factory which means that the combustion chamber and pistons are smooth so the pistons are not rubbing against the chamber so a seal was not formed therefore oil is escaping any body got loads and loads of soot at the end of the exhaust, apparently there was a press release on the Volkswagen press release site although I haven't seen this myself this information was given to me buy a former Volkswagen master technician fingers crossed the problem will be sorted now after the third party do there stuff will keep u updated!

That make a lot of sense.
Whenever we build engines we use a basic mineral oil to allow the engine to bed in.
Only after a few thousand miles of bedding in do we swap to a good synthetic oil.

It seems that in this constant quest for extra long service intervals - the basic function of bedding engines in has been overlooked.
