1.4 Gearbox broken

Firstly i would like to say hello as im a newbie on here and this is my first post.
My gearbox is making some very strange clanging noise when under load but is very bad in fourth.
Do i have to get a gearbox from a 1.4 ibiza or is there other options i can fit and what is the going rate for a second hand gearbox?

Forgot to say its a 1996 p reg with an AEX engine,i think.

Polo 1.4, and Arosa 1.4 gearboxes should also fit

not sure on the golfs.... I know the Mk4 1.4 used to have the APQ engine which was the same as my old 1.4 Ibiza, but not sure if it had the same gearbox or not.....

How easy is it to change the engine to a bigger one,1.6 or 2.0?
Is it just a straight swap?

changing from 1.4 to 1.6 is almost a straight swap, but insurance would bum you for it as you've made a major change to the car. 2 litre's are also possible but this is a MAJOR job. If your thinking of a new engine i'd just buy a whole new car, given the age and value of yours.

if your lookin for a cheap gearbox try "www.breakeryard.com" i got mine for £135, it was a used gearbox mind!

have a look on Ebay,.... there's a guy on here in the Arosa section who's just removed the engine and gearbox from a 1.4 Arosa, and has put them both up on there

I bought an O2A gearbox for my 16v for £56 on eBay... But the dude re-listed it before I had chance to collect it!

There's got to be a 1.4 Ibiza/Arosa/Polo being broken on the bay.

If not, try Only VW Motorsport on 01254 697988, they tend to be quite cheap.

Ive just been to a breakers yard and found a gearbox which looks exactly the same in a 1.4 MK3 Golf,couldnt see the numbers but i will when its out.

from what I can find out, the Mk3 1.4 Golf was fitted with either an 084 (4-speed) or an 085 95 speed)

so check that the GOlf it's coming out of was a 5-speed

Just been and checked that gearbox in the golf and it has the same numbers as my old one.
085.301.103

just need to cross your fingers that it hasn't been ragged too much when it was in the golf !!!!
