a sick PD150 ?

My Leon FR PD150 is suffering from man flu i think.

Just after i did an oil and filter change my car started to sound really poor. Ive put in the right amount of oil and the correct grade, so dont know if this is just a coincident.

The car sounds louder and with less power. getting a "bap bap bap" sound on idle and through the rev range, like a crappy version of a subaru on idle.

sometimes it clears itself and its ok, but then it comes back again. Also seem to be getting vibration through the steering wheel at higher speeds when its making this sound.

Could it be a gearbox or engine mount ?, the cambelt slipped a tooth ? a dying turbo ? another boost leak ?

Any ideas ?

Check all your boost pipes firstly

yer might have to. Getting sick and tired of this boost pipes. even upgraded the pancake pipe and hoses with an SFS item and managed to even blow the hose off that once and then again from the turbo end. Might as a precaution order some new green grooved boost seal rings.

That sounds like its a cylinder down.
i also thought that like its firing on 3 cylinders ?

Check the fault codes.
i did and vag.com is finding nothing ?

My moneys on worn camshaft / hydrualic lifters

My pd160 did the same. Had to replace camshaft, tappets, followers and tandem pump :(

if thats the case whats the sort of cost, and i wont be doing this myself so ill be looking at labour costs on top. If this was the fault, would it come and go though ? although it doesnt appear to be going anymore ?

My golf pd150 sounded the same when the tapet went. Stop running it until you can get the head off and check. I ended up having to replace the head too :(

At what sort of cost if you don't mind me asking ?

Could this be an opportunity for any performance upgrade ?

Hmm it was a about 12-1300 I think, it was a few years ago but I had the work done at a local vw specialist. VW wanted over 3500.
Mine was pretty bad, the tapped had snapped and the mashed against the head, damaging that. Luckily it didn't damage the piston.
I ended up with new head, tapet, camshaft, Cam belt and water pump, plus glow plugs and labour.

12-1300 is what it cost me, if the tandem pump is gone make sure you have relevant oil and filter changes done again as there will be a bit of diesel in the sump. I had mine done with a kolbenschmidt uprated cam, think it was about 150 more expensive

Was the uprated cam a performance gain ?

Not sure, I only ordered it to ensure it wouldn't happen again any time soon, it's made from stainless steel iirc instead of the cast kit tat comes standard. Would imagine it could take a bit more of a beating than the original parts.

I sold it 2 weeks after though as I was sick of chucking money at it
