Hi all,

i have a resonated milltek on the car at the moment, but its not got that sound about it... i dont want it to sound barry but i wanted a bit more.

Rather than buy a new exhaust i thought about having it cut open, the baffles taken (or some of them) out and then rewelded... should save me a bit of money.

Im having the exhaust dropped off because its knocking on the rear beam, so im going to sort that, and straighten it... so i thought, whilst its off.

Will this work, or cause me problems??

well mo arif as got miltek turbo back with no cat and his doesn't pop and bang he says but it's not a bad thing when you hear cars going down the road just popping and banging means it's slightly over fueling

if im honest though, i kind of want it a little bit... the big kid in me..

i might remove the middle box and decat, see what that gives me.. if i dont like it then i can always change.

Mo, you suffer aswel with the milltek, what do you think the outcome of cutting it open and removing the baffles or some of it?

I was going going to ask you the same question after you had done this! lol, it is possible to do this but i'm worried about the structure of the box messing up, i.e. might keep ripping open due to the pressure that goes through it, yes in theory you can de-baffle it, loads of motorbike guy's do this, I think we may need someone from Milltek or experience to confirm whether it can be done correctly and if so will it actually make a difference?

My other option(s) I'm pondering is selling the back-box on it's own should fetch ok'ish money and buying a new Scorpion / Piper one that should mate up perfectly by the looks of things or custom back-box

Or

Wait for pete to give me his! lol

I know one thing though, it IS the back box thats reducing the noise etc, my previous custom set-up had a resonated centre pipe but tiny'sh baffled back box and it was awesome!

hah!

well i know a garage who has been welding for 30years, always worth a go as hes a bit of a shady one, welded a decat pipe on the bmw whilst he welded the cat back together for free!

might even ring milltek tomorrow.

i dont think selling the backbox will get me enough cash to get another backbox... i either want a straight swap or enough cash to buy another!

HMMMM

I would assume it works the same as cutting open a cat and removing the innards? alot of the 306 boys do that.. and the cat survives.

Dont worry bud I'm in no rush, you going full respray? might aswell get some facelift bumpers / kit going?

you can actually buy a cheap exhaust from the bay that looks nice back box only mind and get a custom place to weld the hangers on. there are some superb looking cheap back box's about, I reckon it would cost around £80-100 all in, and the Milltek back box's go for that much.

Here, there and everywhere ;)
The Milltek systems dont use baffles..havent done for a long while.

They utilise straight perforated tube with acoustic material packed around it to form the internals of the silencer.

Opening the silencer up will only cause you problems in the long run TBH.

I would advise putting a downpipe with either cat or decat and use a non-res centre section, this will give an increase in sound and a deeper tone.

ahh thanks for that Ravey, but ultimately im looking for pops and bangs from a decat/race cat and the milltek seems to restrict that..

back to the drawing board then!

I'll say again, you need...

3" DP
3" Decat/Race-Cat
2.5" or larger Cat-Back with no middle box and a very small (custom) Back-Box that uses a straight through design i.e. cylindrical silencer with pipe from mid-pipe > tail pipe surrounded by a little muffling material (depending on what sound you want).

i actually have that written somewhere... i was just trying to be tight and "sort" the milltek.

Il just get a custom jobbie and sell the milltek on then :)
