Best place for a new turbo

Hi all,

The turbo on our 04 plate 110 TDI seems to have packed in. I have read a bit about limp mode on here but, not being very handy with cars :redface:, I booked it into the local Seat dealer. They told me that the actuator is starting to stick and said I needed a new turbo (£1,200 fitted). I'm just not too sure that this is the best price I could get.

Additionally, I would prefer to speak to someone who specialises in turbos. It would be good to speak to someone who can tell me the best course of action i.e. best turbo to get, what price to pay, also if there are any other parts needed.

Do you have any recommendations who I should contact? I would just like more information before I pay out so much money.

When you say its packed in does it not spin? or is it giving the dreaded limp mode? have you asked them to clean it for you instead? i would have thought it very unusual that the turbo has gone completly good luck though

The emissions warning light had come on (EML light) and there seemed to be no turbo at all - it struggled to get over 60.

As previously said, the mechanic said the actuator was starting to stick and it was best to order a new one. However, I've just returned from having an enthusiastic drive. Usually, the car doesn't get driven hard and I had read that the turbo doesn't like too much of a gentle life (or did I imagine reading that!). Anyhoo, although the acceleration doesn't seem quite as lively as before, it was much more like it used to be.

Therefore, I think I'll hold off on the new turbo at the moment, and in the meantime find someone who has a bit of specialist knowledge of turbos in case I do need help in the future.

Yes your not supposed to baby them or the variable vanes in the turbo get coated in soot, hence your VNT actuator getting stuck (this is what moves the vanes).

Recommended driving cycle for engine, cat and turbo longevity is:

1. Start engine, 20-30 secs for oil to get to turbo.

2. Gear changes at 2500rpm until the temperature gauge needle reaches the line before the one which it rests at.

3. Gear changes at 3500k thereafter.

4. When Stopping let the car idle for 10 - 20 secs to let the turbo spool down to prevent premature wear.

I know it may sound like a funny way of prolonging engine life, but it is proven.
There are TDIClub members on 250k+ using this method and I myself am on 130k with no turbo issues.
Keeping the turbo under boost prevents soot buildup by blasting it off (it's that simple).

It may also be worth your while looking up innotec turbo cleaner.
It isn't the best turbo cleaning method but it's fairly simple to do.


And with regards to getting a new turbo, I wouldn't bother.
Just get yours reconditioned or get a reconditioned one.
Most places do discounts for reconditioned turbos if you give them your knackered one.

Easy on the innotec guys, it does work if done properly.
New turbo means brand new and that would be dealer fit obviously.
Almost all the other outlets are reconditioned anyway.
Try turbo technics at Northampton if you do need to replace it.
They are very competetive on price with good customer service.

google - turbo center UK and give them a ring also

i've just ordered one for my altea 2.0tdi

exchange garret turbo £395 + vat with 2 year warranty
they quoted £575 + vat for a brand new garret with 2 year warranty but my warranty firm wouldnt cough up for this

Find the steepest hill in the area and plant the car a few times up it.
Or try the old MOT emission trick, drive the car on high/max rpm for several minutes to create severe heat. It takes off dirt and soot particles.
