Exhaust Resonator - Cupra

After driving the Cupra around this last month I have decide to put in a custom exhaust system next month. With that in mind I wonder what the car would sound with the stock OEM resonator removed with a straight pipe put in its place.

Went to a local exhaust shop that did it in 15 minutes for 20 euro. They used a 65mm pipe that was tapered so the two cut ends where the resonator had been fitted perfectly.

Sound at idle was slightly louder but when driving you could now tell the car was announcing itself. For those that like a louder exhaust it was a nice note with the stock muffler still doing an excellent job. Droning in the car is to be expected but in the front not too noticeable though back seat passengers might have a bigger problem.

Power band was still the same, as expected....

Overall for 20 euro it made a bigger impact then the Forge spacer when it comes to performance noise... and is cheaper as well.

On a side note the OEM exhaust is something to modify. I would look at the down pipe as well as higher flowing cats..... I am not sure but the stock exhaust is around 63mm(if anyone knows please let me know) so a nice 76-77mm exhaust diameter would be perfect....

I had a few days of driving the car without the resonator. My opinion is that the car sounds great and can still be quiet when you are going easy on the throttle... I thought the car would drone more without the resonator but it does not...

The car now sounds like what I thought a Cupra should sound like without being modded. When you go fast it not only goes fast but sounds fast as well :)

Again for a 20 euro modification I feel it is well worth it... I wonder if anyone else has done this as well?

After driving the car without a resonator for more then a month I love it... When I first removed the resonator I was worried about resonance especially with the rear passengers but no one has complained and it actually sounds like an after market exhaust. Thumbs up on this modification....

Now I am not one to leave things alone so I was wondering has anyone removed both the resonator and muffler and replace it with a straight pipe? If so how loud was the car? Also was the sound quality exhaust noise or just sounding like an old 2 liter motor that had rusted beyond repair? :)

I am thinking of removing the muffler just to get an idea as I think it might be loud or sounding just too ricey which I don't want. What I do want is an aggressive roar that will let other drivers know that don't mess with this Cupra for their own health..... :)

So far I have been playing around with the exhaust on my Cupra and I founded that if you take off the stock resonator and second CAT that will give you a much better sound especially if you keep the stock muffler on. The car now growls when you accelerate and it is a deep sound dued to the chamber of the back stock muffler... If you just put in a straight pipe or a smaller high flow muffler it sounds more like a diesel engine with a raspy component/note that is annoying so keep in the the stock muffler...

Also by removing the second CAT you will noticed a performance gain as well without triggering any CEL codes...

My next step is to put a downpipe on and see the difference while using the stock exhaust diameter (60mm) and after that I will upgrade the entire exhaust piping to 76mm thruout with a high-flow 200 cell CAT and hope I don't lost too much low-end torque because of the large diameter piping... Seems like for real world conditions I am being advised to stay around 63mm...

Any opinions on exhaust pipe diameter for the Cupra running REVO code without losing low end torque? Has anyone have experience with 76mm exhausts on this car?

Thanks...

Total cost was 50 euro at my local exhaust shop for taking off the resonator and second CAT so it was well worth it for the sound and slight performance gain...

I will try it next week, so resonator and second CAT hmm, ok thanks ;)

All dealers should be able to REVO your car... No obvious problems with the fuel pump so far but I am installing a downpipe and a p-flo intake so we will see....

ESP works in 4th gear on our roads so I am looking for a bigger tire combo for the car.. I like the 255/35 18 but don't know if it will fit on the front without rubbing... I am working to find that out... :)

330hp is my goal and with fuel pump and a good intake/exhaust and smart programming I expect to hit that....

Yes and replace with straight pipe... That is all I did and it sounds great to MY ears... Now you might or might not like it since car sounds are left up to the individual taste :)

Let me know what you think when you have it done... I will see if I can find someone with a cam to take some video and will post it when I can.....

You could just record the sound with you cellphone, or someone else could when you drive. Just revving sound could be interesting too.
