Water leak Collecting in Boot behind the rear light

Hi guys,

my Leon Cupra R is collecting a lot of water behind the driver side rear light (Car is LHD), when it rains or sprayed with a waterhose.

I already redid both seals where the roof and quarterpanel are welded together. This solved the problem in the wheel well and the passanger side (right side) but not the problem on the driver side.

I also sealed the antenna because there were some watermakrs aswell, redid the light seals and sealed the cablesleaves coming from the bootlid ... did nothing.

Water is coming in somewhere between the roof and where the dampers are mounted to the chassis.
The water runs through the uprights down to the vents in the back of the car and collects there.

I dont know what to do, i redid all of the areas already mentioned in this forum, looked all over the Internet and didnt find anything that would cause such a problem.

I would appreciate any help or tips. I can take some pictures this week and attach them to this thread.

the hinges on the rear boot there is plastic cover and they are sealed on and plastic rivets check that, you'll have to drill out the rivet's and replace with trim panel fixings and seal, worth looking at as ive read its come in there i did mine just in case a couple of years ago, also did you remove the roof rail strips as it can rust there its a common fault and sometimes not see it until it creeps up to the roof also sounds like you drain is blocked

Thanks for the idea, also checked them. I replaced the rivets, sealed them and drilled some drain holes. Did nothing...

Is the leak near the 12v socket in the boot? As I’ve just had a leak there and when I pulled it all out it was the connection joint for the rear screen wash and it can run out even if you don’t use it as my r washer bottle was near empty.. I think the cold caused it by icing around the connector, it’s same type of connector that goes to the rear wiper motor

I had that too exact same thing, connection had popped off and it filled the rear left corner of the boot, first of me noticing was a massive puddle on the ground by the rear tyre.

That was how I found the leak and all wet inside it must of been dripping for a while before it popped off as the 12v plug was rusting inside, I ended up cleaning the plug up and put a heater in to dry all the foam up, it clicked back on but I still had a drip so I used self amalgamating tape to seal it that worked well after warming it up, that hard pipe connections are solid not easy to replace unless you use soft pipe and connections

Is it collecting as a puddle in a little metal pocket behind the wheel arch? I have this exact issue and once a year i have to soak it up, im pretty sure it comes in through the louvered looking black vent in the same area.

Sorry that I reply this late. I have to check out the conection for the windscrean wash. Will test if this is the cause of the problem.

Yes, it collects in this pocket however it is coming from way up. The vents are dry.

Was your leak more in the back or in the front? Because the lines for the washer fluid run through the full lenght of the interiour.

I have checked the washer lines ... they seem fine. Headliner is dry and no disconnected lines in sight.

This image shows the path of water ingress inside the car. The blue arrows indicate the direction the water takes on the inside of the pillar (Holm), tracing the vertical flow downwards. The blue lines mark the areas where the water runs along the inside surface of the outer side panel. At the bottom, the water collects, pooling in the lowest section near the floor.

You’ll know it if that connection is leaking , you wrap it in some tissue to see if it is slightly.. use a hose and run water outside and see if water runs in

I’ve only skimmed through this thread, but make sure you check the seam where the c pillar meets the roof. See -

what did you use to seal it ? as you can get a sealant tube that manufactures and garages use to seal wings ect even inner door panels its a cream colour, it works the same as butyl tape but tube form.. under the roof rails hold water also and rust
