2.0TSi (190) - Lumpy Running and Poor MPG

Just to say thanks to the feedback and suggestions on this thread, I am really glad I found it. It sorted out the problem for me too!

My problems started suddenly on one day - lumpy/hesitations, start/stop not working, woeful fuel economy...I thought it strange they all happened together and thought it might be some sensor that was at fault. I mean why would the start/stop say it couldn't turn off the engine because it had to be running! Yes, it is running. But now I know it probably meant, that the engine NEEDS to be running.

Once I found this thread, I too checked the fan and it was staying on after engine turnoff too.
So, onto a 60 mph stretch of road, gearbox to manual, 4000 rpm, then throttle off and coast. I did this 3-4 times over a mile or so, pulled over and the start/stop worked straight away. And back to normal smoothness - Yippee!

So thanks again to all, what a great resource these forums are.

My VW (2.0 litre 200ps EA888 gen3b engine) decided it was time to perform a GPF regeneration last Thursday evening. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to use the above process to help it along its way - it was torrential rain and dark and I was in a stream of slow moving traffic, so I had to just let it get on with it. It took around 20 minutes for the regen process to complete, during which time I saw my fuel consumption for the journey worsen by around 30-35% .

Fortunately everything was back to normal by the end of my journey.

That's good to know that it should complete on it's own. But mine was an issue for 2 days, with about 4 journeys of 20 mins and 1 shorter. It does get a good 50 mile motorway run each week, but I had been using ECO on that, so not again! (Same engine as yours too, except 190)

How hard would it be to remove it like most have done with the dpf filter.
I know the gpf regen software delete can be done.

Pretty sure 1.5 68plate onwards all come with gpf.

Back to normal. It was even the instantaneous mpg reading where it was really obvious. Stretch of road I use a lot, mpg was almost half what it normally is.

Don’t have the link to hand but read on the Skoda forum, that DADA 1.5 TSI which i believe is one of the first generation 1.5 TSI don’t have GPF.

Maybe it did on Audis and Volkswagens earlier?

Which also was one of the main affected engine codes by the kangaroo issue - which I wish I had known ahead of time. Definitely would’ve opted for either an older 1.4 or just a newer 1.5 model.

I believe subsequent revisions of the 1.5 had GPFs.

Is there any sure easy way of even checking?
Tbh it’s not even clear

Believe I’ve tried the 2.0 TSi guidance for forcing a regen but sure it did nothing for me, but may give it a go again on the weekend. Guess I’ve got nothing to loose but time.

Varies massively due to roads of course, but at a steady run on 60mph roads, it would average 55+. My 20 min run to work on a and b roads, very busy and slow traffic lights etc, would be 30. My run home from work on the day it started, it registered 17mpg! This is just from the computer, and I've done it is always about 5-10% optimistic, when measured tank full to tank full. The petrol gauge went down by 3 bars over a couple of yep l small trips, even normally it wouldn't move.

I don't think I have a light on the dash for the gpf.

The procedure I followed doesn't force a regen, rather it encourages the gpf to get 'cleaned' by giving it lots of oxygen (as it does normally do a 'passive regen' when you are decelerating). When it was trying to do an 'active' regen, with all the lumpiness and bad mpg, there was not light on the dash either.

I know, difficult to tell. It really grates me that we don't get a manual with the car anymore, or any sort of proper paper service book. Earlier in the thread (or was it another thread) someone posted a picture from a 2019 manual which showed how to clean the gpf on the 2.0 TSI, with this 'lift-off' procedure. I have an electronic copy of the manual for the mk3 but it doesn't have this info.
