Passport number required for a free purchase??

Just been on Cupra connect and saw you can download Amazon Alexa which is free. Added it to the cart and now it's asking for my passport number!? Anyone else done this? I'm sure it fine, but seem a bit OTT! Can't remember purchasing anything other than a plane ticket where I've been asked for my passport details to purchase.

It's because the 'purchase' is processed by Seat/Cupra in Spain and Spanish consumer law states that any purchases online or with a credit or debit card must be accompanied by a D.N.I number (which is a Spaninsh national identity number) where these don't exist (ie. Foreigners) they must be accompanied by their national ID (so in this case a passport) it's basically to prevent against fraud. Even though its free, it is still deemed as a purchase and subject to the consumer protections.

I used my Driving Licence number as i don't have a passport, dealership even said to do that.

Ok thanks, I was a bit wary about it, but didn't realise it was Spanish consumer rules. Is it worth getting the Alexa app? Presumably I can log into it and use my prime music sub? I.e. "Alexa, play xxx...."?

I suppose so, I have Spotify premium with my Vodafone contract, so that covers all bases including the unlimited data aspect.

I just put in a made up number in the UK passport format and it was accepted with no issues.

Only issue with doing that, is should you have a problem that needs resolving, they will ask for your name and ID number, so unless you have it written down you may not be able to get any issues resolved if a fault appeared with your 'purchase'

I think you will find it's your order number, email and VIN number that they use to identify you. I for one, have no intention of giving them genuine passport or driving license details after 3 million VAG customers in Canada and the USA had their data hacked and sold on a few years ago.

That's the details they ask for, with actual car purchase stuff. Anything to do with iasues with OTA purchases they ask for different bits of data ie your name and ID number.

Giving false information could (if they were petty enough to proceed with it) render you liable to prosecution as its effectively fraud, entering knowingly false information to obtain a product. As someone who has lived in Spain, it is very much frowned upon and the penalties are very harsh indeed.

May as well either enter the information as asked or not continue with the purchase, it's your choice at the end of the day, the second you potentially bring fraud into it, it no longer becomes your choice and it could have greater repercussions (unlikely but potentially).

Having thought about it, it's probably not worth the hassle anyway because unless I'm mistaken, you need a data package? Certainly don't intend on using it that often to warrant buying one, and hotspot on a phone absolutely hammers the battery.

This is the reply I got from UK customer services as I objected to putting in a passport number. They previously said to put in random numbers.

The processing of passport / identity number data is needed to comply with the obligations stablished in several EU Regulations and sanctions programs where the lists of sanctioned persons/entities are included. The legal obligation is to check these sanctions list before selling any product or service, which are directly applicable to companies based in EU Member States.
