Adding hydraulic bonnet struts to the Formentor

These are the struts I fitted. When fitted with the piston at the bonnet side, the bonnet still did not touch but the piston pressed on the insulation foam underneath. No big deal, but now I turned them 180° and maybe at the worst it is just touching with the foam.

Sounds good, I'm really tempted, any photos? Do you have to lift the bonnet far before the struts take over and how about when lowering, do you have to be careful not to let the bonnet slam too hard? I did have to be careful of that with the Jingling ones though it was still better than having none at all!
Thing is I also have a 2004 BMW Z4 Roadster with factory bonnet gas struts. The bonnet is huge but the struts take control as soon as the catch is released and it closes all the way down perfectly without slamming. If I could have ones like these on the Formentor I'd be well happy 😊.

I'd like some that actually take control more, as well. My Jinglings don't really do anything except for the last 20-30 cm of lift. They slam the remainder 50cm if I press the hood down.

I just found this thread as it came up AFTER I started one. I did try and search honest!! I couldn't believe nobody wanted gas struts.

Gives an alternative supplier and lower price ...

Hi, Just fitted a pair of gas lift struts for the bonnet. Got em from Ali Express

£26.55 inc delivery.

Came with the fixings, just needed a spray of grease on all fastenings. The car is already drilled and a tapped thread ready for them, but the hole is covered with a small black rubberised sticker. You simply unbolt the colour painted upper fastening bolt on the bonnet and insert the supplied ball joint bracket, then re-attach for the top fixing. (12mm nut)

The lower fastening as I said, remove the sticker, put fastening in and tighten - lower nut 10mm, upper is 12mm. Snap on gas struts and test.

On the link someone has posted pics of the job done if you want to see result.

I wish I'd gone for the red to match car colour, but then again how often is the bonnet open!!

Did you check that there's no contact between the new struts and the underside of the bonnet?
Some mentioned previously on this topic they got marks/damage on the paint after the installation.

I’ve also read on some VW forums that when these aftermarket bonnet struts are fitted on the mk8 Golf, the strut nearest to the cooling system expansion tank can foul the expansion tank when the bonnet is closed.

Maybe that’s not a problem on the Formentor?

They touch the rubber seal at the top end of the bonnet. You'd imagine it needed a cut out, but when you press it it's very soft and hollow, so no problem.

Hi,
I've installed such struts too several weeks ago.
I didn't know about this kind of damage risks. I'll take look at them.
Thanks for the tips.
