Leon 184 FR Help Needed

Hi all;

I just have a couple of questions. See if anyone could possibly help or know.

I brought a 2013 FR diesel model. Just having a few issues. Any help or ideas is much appreciated.

1) can hear a slight rumble after 50mph. Really slight but can still hear it.

2) rear NS tyre low pressure warning. Comes on once a week. I reset it but it comes back on. I’ve checked the pressure and it’s fine.

3) Cold start can time longer to start. It always starts. But takes a few more seconds after it’s been switched off over night.

4). DPF warning light came on the other day. I’ve had the car for 2 months and it never has before. And did go off after a minute or 2. Guessing this one isn’t a problem.

thanks all

It's a known 'feature' of the 184 engine

youtube videos suggest it's the variable valve timing component that causes it. Apparently a modified part is now available.
Not sure how much £££'s or time required to replace it.

I'm on my 2nd car with the 184 engine - i've just accepted it as a feature.

well least that’s one thing not to worry about. Thanks for the advice. I’ll not let that bother me then

No 6,7 & 8 are all matched via year - mid 2015 there was a change in part number.

The valve (7) and housing (8) are around £100-150 each respectively but the adjuster unit (6) is more like £500! so to change all would be an expensive option.

You (and I?) may be lucky and can just clean/change the valve? maybe the sticking pin in the middle it the culprit?

I think I’ll leave all that for now and concentrate on the other problems. At least I know it’s not just mine with this problem

The slight rumble and pressure warning could be linked. Have you had a good check of the tyre, make sure there isn't any nails anywhere? Also it could have lost some wheel weights. Might be worth a tyre shop checking it. It's not actually checking the pressure of the tyre but any changes in rotation.

What kind of journeys do you drive, you want to make sure it's being taken on good runs and let it warm up for the DPF to clear.

Thanks for the reply. I do have long journeys almost 2/3 times a week. 30 odd miles on a motorway every other day almost too. I’ll have the tyre checked though definitely. Hopefully they will find something and it will sort of 2 problems in one.

Is this diagram of the changed parts after mid 2015? I hope so as I've got the part 8 with the 'dustbin' on the side!

There have been several versions - with and without dustbin!

> mid 2015 03L109096 superseeded to 03L109096B without dustbin!

Well it seems my memory is not what it used to be... haha.

Just checked my engine and there is NO VVT solenoid!! so a sticking VVT valve definitely isn't causing my occasional long cranks!
Lucky I double checked as I was about to but a gasket so I could pull the 'VVT solenoid and inspect!

My car is 2015 & my engine code is CUPA - and after googling it seems it's only the CUNA (for the 184) which has VVT and also another exhaust sensor apparently - and maybe 2xEGR - So this seems emissions related - my engine classed as Euro 5 1/5. Is the CUNA Euro 6 & LEZ?

1) - not sure (see 2)
2) - the tyre pressure warning system is very rudimentary and works off wheel speed and is usually measured via your ABS sensor. If it detects a speed anomoly, it will think your tyre pressure has changed. Could be a wheel bearing or similar and therefore links with #1 as it's confusing your ABS sensor.
3) Known issue with VVT. I let my glow plug light go out and wait a few more seconds before cranking. Sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't. Worse in cold weather.
4) Buy a Carista dongle and get VAG DPF app on your phone. You can then see the state of your DPF, when it is due a regen, performing a regen and also see how much `bottom ash` is in the DPF (basically how used/full up it is). A DPF light coming on suggests it is not completing a normal passive or active regen and can be a symtom of other issues. Not the end of the world but not to be ignored and for £30 you can monitor it yourself.

CARISTA

thanks for the reply. Some useful information.

so just an update today really. That type is now flat. So I don’t know what happened but I’m guessing the car knew better than me so that’s all fine.

the DPF light did only come on once. Although I have noticed this car seems to regenerate a lot. I mean at least once a day. Is that normal?

Also. Just looked on CARISTA. And the soot level is 19.98g. Don’t know if this is high or low?

Sounds like it really needs a regen, I think that is full. Generally it does one every 200 miles and takes around 15-20 minutes to complete.

When it is doing one you will notice things such as the gear indicator tells you to change down gears nearer 1k revs. Revs will sit at 1k revs on idle. Start-stop also won't work and on the status will say 'engine must be running'. If you turn the car off in the middle of one, the cooling fan on the front will continue to run for a period of time, along with hot air coming from near the wheel arch. Just some the things I've noticed.

Download the VAG DPF free app, you can use your carista dongle and it will say km since last regen and soot mass (g)

If you can post a screenshot from VAG DPF that will help. A regen once a day is not right. Mine used to regen around 180 miles and now it's nearer 120 miles. I changed job and rather than a 20 mile commute each way I now work from home and do 5 mile journeys and the odd longer one. The DPF seems to fill up quicker as a result as the car barely gets up to temp. The car has also done 109,000 miles so the DPF might be getting full of bottom ash. It's hard to tell.

My car triggers a DPF regen at 23.37 grams (a mechanic friend was able to see that using VCDS). It usually drops to about 5 to 7 grams to fully complete a regen.

If you can get VAG DPF it's really worth it. The screenshot will look like this and we can then offer an opinion.

I think it's oil ash residue being the bottom ash, mine attached for comparison

So I just did a regen on the CARISTA. It dropped to 7.50. By time I was home after that. 5/ 10 minutes later. It was 7.88.

It will start to build up again after a regen so that should be fairly normal. Try and see how many miles it does before it gets to about 22 grams as it should trigger a regen around then.

If you had VAG DPF, it would be a lot easier to help!
