Pics I took a moment ago whilst going over the car a bit more.

As you can see, isn't quite so pretty and slightly annoyed as the more I look at it I feel like I've overpaid so I'll have my work cut out to recoup the costs on this venture.

The most important factor is that it runs well although the 270ish miles I've done in it already have highlighted some things.

The coilovers are too stiff, so much in fact that after approximately 20miles a jolt caused my windscreen phone/ sat nav mount to shear off!

The Recaro front seats desperately need replacement base foams as the metal bars are incredibly uncomfortable to sit on.
This coupled with the stiff suspension made it a rather fidgety journey back home.

The exhaust system is a bit too crude for my liking.
Fairly reasonable on the motorway and barely noticable with the techno pounding out haha but around town and in particular on cold start and idling outside my house it's a touch asbo for my tastes.

Headlights - or lack of last night! They've had tint film applied and I genuinely thought they were switched out whilst driving up my street at 11pm last night.

I've now torn it all off as I like to see what's in front of me.

OEM double din headunit lasted approximately 2 mins of ownership and was pulled out in favour of my trusty ole lightweight Sony single din bluetooth unit to make the traffic more bearable.

I also plan on pulling out the drivers air vent mounted boost gauge as
1. I don't use them
2. It's far too bright and distracting at night time.

Just for my info, when you upgrade the engines this much apart from the Clutch can the stock gearbox cope.

I've heard there's some parts which would benefit from some upgrading ie selector fork arms.

If they're anything like golf MK2 gearboxes then good luck they were useless

I did a little research on this a while ago and from what I've read they're pretty strong gearboxes.
As mentioned the selector forks can break but this is usually a result of quick shifting under load and not necessarily down to out right power put through as it can happen in standard ones.
Plenty of people are saying the 02M gearbox internals are safe for well over 400bhp and over 500bhp with just the diff uprated.

Put it this way as long as mine is healthy I should be ok for now.

Yup the brass riveted selector forks are the weak point! Also 3rd or 4th year tend to shear off. Due to bearings wearing out

The forks can simply be bolted back on though which is obviously handy.
Yeah I've read about 4 gear coming off! Ha

Better to go with the hardened steel ones that are welded not riveted from the next generation after 02m

It's taken a while to get some logistics into place including the mammoth task of securing somewhere to work in but the swap finally began today.

I had a couple of hours spare so managed to get the grey one jacked up, wheels off, coolant drained, AC disconnected and most of the front end off.

I've booked tomorrow off work so I'm hoping to get the engine fully unplugging and hoisted out - fingers crossed!

I've pulled a fair few engines out of these cars now so kind of knew what I was up against.
Luckily there weren't too many problematic bolts to tackle either.
I was very methodical about this particular one though as I knew it had to go back together and run again.
All plugs were labelled and all bolts were bagged and tagged as they came off the car instead of the usual slung on the floor in a pile ready for scrap.

I'm hoping to get another good go at things tomorrow and drop the exhaust system and start cleaning the engine bay.

So far on initial visual inspections I noticed the following issues:

Both AC O-rings onto the condenser were weeping which would explain why the system never got icy cold even after regassing.

Pink coolant residue build up around the back of the crankshaft pulley wheel.
Yet another pointer towards water pump failure destroying the engine and makes sense as I was having weird cooling system level fluctuations earlier in the year.

Lots of oil around the back of the engine block and all over my lovely refurbed subframe and steering rack so I'm assuming the rocker cover gasket and half moon seal had seen their best days.

One snapped breather pipe below the inlet manifold!

I'm sure I'll find plenty more once I start dismantling the engine and gearbox.
