Number plates advice?

Hey all!

I'm picking up my new(er) 2016 Leon ST 2.0 TDi 184bhp FR next Saturday (side note: can't bloody wait!). I looked back at some pictures I took of the car on my phone when I viewed it at the Seat dealer and noticed it had plain number plates on it. I asked the dealer if they could swap them to GB plates as we occasionally pop to Calais to replenish our alcohol cupboard (that's right, an entire cupboard!). They said it was fine, but it would cost me £24 to have them made. I was expecting this price and know a certain auction site offering them for £10 so politely declined.

Now... today I was looking back through my phone and found pictures of the vehicle the dealer texted to me when I put a deposit down to hold it a few days before I viewed it (so I could still look at it after they removed it from their website). In these pictures it has GB plates on it!

1) Is my dealer being extremely cheeky asking me to pay for plates that are quite obviously already made? What will they do with them after I've bought it other than chuck them!?

2) If they aren't willing to just give them to me (c'mon, I'm paying thousands for the car, giving me the £24 plates nothing) I wonder about the legality of owning plates of another owner's car. In theory, if they're stolen or anyone at the dealer is a bit dodgy, they could pop them on a similar car and I could get DVLA on me for speeding fines I didn't commit.

Anyone know the laws on this? I have done a quick google but the results seem to be more about people making plates for other people's cars and not this way round.

Thanks!

Garry

I'd imagine the plates on the car had another dealers name on them so they have been taken off and disposed of.

I'd either push to get them FOC and if they refuse then get them off eBay. £10 isn't the end of the world and not worth arguing over.

Ah, yes. Another dealer name on them - could have done I guess. I'd want confirmation they were disposed of though. £10 isn't the end of the world and I'm happy to order them. Just thought if they've still got them knocking around in a cupboard then why not just give them to me.

Just on point 2 regardless of what plates you get with the car your still going to have the duplicate issue.
My money is the dealer not being aware they exist already

That's my gut feeling too. I'm waiting for a callback from the dealer now to discuss a few things ahead of picking it up next week, but I suspect he didn't realise the GB plates already existed and just quoted me the cost to have them made.

The picture I have of it with GB plates is too poor quality to zoom in and read the garage name along the bottom of the plates unfortunately.

If you are talking about the GB with Euro stars don't forget when/if we leave the EU there is every chance those plates will be invalid, by that I mean you'll have to stick on a separate GB plate anyway. You know the French fuzz, any excuse...

Yeah, I did think about this. Surely though with the amount of people with GB plates there will have to be either an agreement to allow the blue GB plates after we leave or something? Either way though if the dealer have both plain and GB I can have both and swap them as and when the Frenchies say we can't have them any more.

ever tried arguing with a French Gendarme? They are big , sweaty, smell of cheese, snails garlic and onions , have zero grasp of the English language , intense hatred of anything remotely British, carry big sticks and, most importantly, carry a big f--k off cannon that they get a bonus for every month for pulling it out and waving it. Oh yes, and they have some mates in a group called 'CRS' who like beating people to death ( allegedly) for fun ...
And before anyone accuses me of being racist I quite like France itself, I'm also part French ( which bit I've no idea)
Even when I had a car with a Euro GB plate on I still put an extra GB one on, just in case.
I also went with Manx plates on, now THAT did really confuse them.... :D
