Hey all!
I'm picking up my new(er) 2016 Leon ST 2.0 TDi 184bhp FR next Saturday (side note: can't bloody wait!). I looked back at some pictures I took of the car on my phone when I viewed it at the Seat dealer and noticed it had plain number plates on it. I asked the dealer if they could swap them to GB plates as we occasionally pop to Calais to replenish our alcohol cupboard (that's right, an entire cupboard!). They said it was fine, but it would cost me £24 to have them made. I was expecting this price and know a certain auction site offering them for £10 so politely declined.
Now... today I was looking back through my phone and found pictures of the vehicle the dealer texted to me when I put a deposit down to hold it a few days before I viewed it (so I could still look at it after they removed it from their website). In these pictures it has GB plates on it!
1) Is my dealer being extremely cheeky asking me to pay for plates that are quite obviously already made? What will they do with them after I've bought it other than chuck them!?
2) If they aren't willing to just give them to me (c'mon, I'm paying thousands for the car, giving me the £24 plates nothing) I wonder about the legality of owning plates of another owner's car. In theory, if they're stolen or anyone at the dealer is a bit dodgy, they could pop them on a similar car and I could get DVLA on me for speeding fines I didn't commit.
Anyone know the laws on this? I have done a quick google but the results seem to be more about people making plates for other people's cars and not this way round.
Thanks!
Garry
