The gear knob in my car is worn and is getting worse where the top layer of the coating has worn through to a sticky glue layer. The gear knob model is the same as pictured below:
and benj1989 had the gear knob carbon dipped which seems like a good alternative to buying a new knob.

Question is, will the carbon dip coating last?
Alternatively, is there another solution to my problem, maybe getting it recovered in real leather, or buying a different model gear knob that won't cost the earth?
When I bought my car I thought that the gear knob was real leather, is the steering wheel made out of the same awesome long-lasting material as the gear knob?
TIA
