Oh, ok. The reason I ask is there have been issues on the VW and Audi forums where cars have been left in gear on hills and chains have slipped.

Thanks Rich I've seen some of those too.

After some head scratching over the weekend I think my best bet is to go and find a reconditioned EA888 CCZB engine, or a good quality indie that would take a look at the damage at a lesser cost than a dealer.

Does anyone have any suggestions of places that could do this in the West yorkshire area?

That might be a good call, mate. At least with that approach, you're guaranteed a good outcome.

I have no idea where to go for something like that, though. Sorry.

Make sure and get the newest revision of the tensioner fitted either as part of the repair or have it fitted to the recon engine.

Fine advice.

Ive found a local garage that will recondition the engine for around £2k with a 6 month warranty, this includes fitting the new version of the tensioner. The place in question has been in business for over 40 years, so im hopeful on quality.

The thing that really gets me about all this is that theres a known fault with these engines and vw brands are not alerting thier customers that they need to take preventative measures outside of standard servicing. I can kinda see why from a cost and reputation perspective, if they open the box by owning up to the fault theres no putting it back again and it could be a good basis for further customer action.

If i could only handle driving a kia...

It is pretty disgusting behaviour from VAG, there are plenty of people that have pushed them and got it sorted for free or heavily discounted but I guess it's not always practical if you need your car back quick and don't have the weeks/months to push them until they give in.
Just another example of big companies not giving a hoot about their customers, they got their money on the car and in most cases get more for a hefty repair....win win for them!

Hi Jim, sorry I've taken a while to respond. I would try and follow the details that I have posted as I was in exactly the same position as you mate. Everntually after the letter to higher up the chain I 'only' had to pay a minimal amount VS the £7500 that I was having to spend at the start! A few letters and searches on google saved me £6000! I still have the letter that I wrote if you need it mate, PM me and I'll whip it over to you.
Again very sorry for such a delayed reply.
Mark

PS I sold the car in July 2014 for £9k so that happy owner should have some good motoring, Now living in Australia where SEAT are no where to be seen!
