Update: blown turbo Cupra 280 repaired and failed again

No chance of using any performance around here on the morning commute that is for sure. The only time I see the start/stop working is in that early morning traffic which is about 2 days a week for me. Of course I have no idea what sort of life the car lived for it's first 5000 miles though by the SatNav addresses it seems it spent most of it's time in and around MK which makes sense as it was registered to SEAT UK.

Lets see what today brings.

Modern turbo engines don't need to be left running. Even the latest Ferrari 488 which has a lot more performance than a Cupra can be switched straight off. The car wouldn't be fitted wth a start/stop system if it was going to do damage to the turbo. Besides, most people live and work in built up areas, so the 30 mph pootle to their driveway should more than suffice.

Don't know about the 488 as that is irrelevant to this thread, but the 280 handbook states (as did my last two Biza Cupras) that if driving hard especially on a hot day, the engine should be idled for a couple of mins to cool down a bit before switching off.

Think you were told some fibs about only being given a VAG loan car, when my wife's 2012 Leon 1.2 TSi needed to be recovered Seat breakdown arranged a hire car through Enterprise, had a Vauxhall Astra the next day!!

Yeah, wasn't best pleased, left it for my wife and drove my S-Max instead!! However, it was arranged very quickly and all by someone else, they even picked me up and drove me to their office to collect the car then collected it from Perrys when the Leon was fixed.

VAG cars only were the exact words of the 'SEAT Replacement Vehicle' team. VAG won't let customers drive about in the opposition was the reason given. This was the main cause of the delay on the day too so if it turns out not to be true there will be trouble ahead for someone at SEAT.

Update - it's a blown turbo...why was nobody listening to me on Friday? I could have saved them hours.

The turbo impeller failed on the 'exhaust side' and the failed parts were found inside the catalyst, which reportedly doesn't seem to be damaged. So the current thinking is the engine should be undamaged. We will see on that one, it sounded bad but who knows.

New turbo arriving tomorrow and the car should be back with me by Wednesday. Oh and I'm getting a Leon to replace the Polo finally too.

Well I can really only see that situation arising on a track day. If my car auto stops when I come to a halt on my drive then the key comes straight out...

Thought that might be the problem, messaged you last week. See if Seat have had failures before, its a pretty new car to have this type of failure. See about extension on warranty to cover turbo, if it turns out to be a manufacturer issue. Im not sure , but that turbo will fit something else VAG I bet.

Thanks, you were spot on.

Dealer hasn't seen any other failures but VAG UK were easily able to identify the problem so they must have some idea from similar S3 and Golf R failures.

If that is true it must be a new idea, as years back a Biza GTI I had would not go as the immobiliser went faulty and the AA got me a car from eurocar and it was not a SEAT.

Oddly enough if the AA arrange your car via AA Relay Plus you can have any car, the AA patrol got so fed up waiting for SEAT Replacement Vehicles to find a VAG car he asked the AA if they could find a car quicker. They could have but under whatever terms - my car going one way to the dealer, and me going the other to my destination - the vehicle had to come from SEAT. Europcar guy confirmed the same message - has to be a VAG if it's from them. If I was being spun a yarn it was a pretty good one.

I work in a Merc main dealership on trucks and vans as a 24hr tech and have seen lots of turbos let go in a big way. You need to keep a eye on the amount of oil that has passed through or is still laying in your exhaust cat and intercooler, in the past with haved had fires in the exhaust box and engines run away due to oil being sucked out the intercooler and fired into the engine. I know this has been on large diesels, but your dealership should beaware.
