I've been using the Sat Nav over the last couple of days and I must advise that you really have to know where you're going before you set off as there's been so many instances when it's trying to take me on some obscure routes, when I went the way I was expecting (not following the sat nav) it cut the arrival time by 30 mins - WTF!

First time I quickly realised it had "Avoid Motorways" on in the setup... but since setting that correctly I would honestly say it's a pile of poo! On the M25 where it splits with the A21 it was telling me to get the in right lane... completely wrong! EDIT; This could be because I set the route to shortest distance so won't hold it against it yet :)
It just keeps wanting you to take longer routes which make no sense and add to the travel time. I'm glad it was free and gives that lovely screen on the dash, but a 5.8" screen is terrible as it should be bigger and with a higher resolution screen, why is the Golf version not available at a premium?

Oh and look at this from the VW Golf configurator on their 5.8" DNS sat nav
Discover Navigation system (DNS)

5.8" colour touch-screen control system for navigation, CD and radio functions. Preloaded European navigation data, 2D/2,5D map view, three calculated routes (Fast, Short, Eco), dynamic navigation based on TMC , branded points of interest and Traffic Sign display. (Includes navigation software updates for a period of three years, please contact your authorised Volkswagen retailer for full details)

Yes but if you check the VW Golf Website the Sat Nav Is a £800 plus Option and as the old saying goes you get what you pay for !!!

Plus I think its a DVD player as update is by disc same as Audi

Just a update on checking the standard 5.8 which I assume is the same as the Leon is £750 It the 8" Upgrade that's £ 1756:D !!! you could hire a chauffer for that

Good point, but then the Sat Nav option on the Leon is in theory an extra at £930! Just happens to be free due to the "current" (constant) offer.

Disappointing News for Owners of in-car NAvi systems !!

SEAT Dealership advises - should I want to update maps regularly then it is going to cost Circa £110-£130 from any Seat Franchise, every time.
If maps are updated say twice a year it’s going to cost £220 - £260 per year.
That’s steep - to purchase a TomTom device with maps is less, and regular updates are free.

SEAT UK (unlike other EU countries) has made little if any provision for support, read on.

Email from SEAT UK Customer Service (seatcars)
I have contacted our Technical support Team and they have responded with answers to your questions, please see the information below:
!! The SD card is not tied to any specific vehicle. When the unit is activated (using an activation code) it allows the unit to read a specific mapping data version. For example, if a unit is activated to read V4 data it will read data from any V4 SD card but not V3 or V5 cards. !!
The original SD card carries the same warranty as the rest of the vehicle and is warranted for 3 years against manufacturing defects. This would not cover damage or loss that is outside the manufacturer’s control, such replacements would be chargeable.
SD cards purchased as an accessory part carry a 2 year parts warranty, with the same exclusions as listed above.
Update Cartography SD cards can be obtained from your local SEAT Dealership. The card will need to be activated using diagnostic equipment, via an online connection to the factory. Updates are released annually, usually at the start of the new model year (end of May). Again your local SEAT Dealership will be able to advise you on the latest mapping version available.
Downloadable updates from the HERE site are only applicable to vehicles with the ‘Map Care’ option. This function/option is not currently available on UK vehicles.
Should you require the mapping checking/updating at service you should make the Dealership aware. This would be a chargeable additional operation.

(Fast, Short, Eco) makes sense, i do use my Nav when travelling to and from Manchester / Hemel Hempstead mainly for traffic and i tend to only follow specific routes and not the nav unless its traffic related.
It does make strange choices admittedly but so did the old Sat Nav in my Mark 2 FR as well.

I'm annoyed by the fact its not free but i do have a tom-tom for emergency use.

I might get a upgrade to our MK2 FR as its on 2011 maps at its next service.

Where I live, we're getting an A-road duelled for about 15 miles. I use this road to and from work everyday. My satnav is telling me I'm driving in a field! There's no way I'm going to be paying for a map upgrade when it's finished if it's upwards of £100 though.....

Not according to my dealer!! Having read all about updates I thought i would go to them as a "thicko" and see what happened.
I bought the updated maps V5 (I have V3) for £125 inc VAT. Just plug the card in they said!

When it arrived I opened the box and the instructions said "must be fitted by garage". This included unplugging battery, attaching computer, linking card to car etc.etc. Doing it wrong could affect the Nav System.

Went back to garage, actually I was on forecourt, and pointed this out. They were most surprised, we always just plug cards in. Have you tried it? Not with the last warning, I said, but you are more than welcome to try if you want to!! haha. They declined.

Then took them almost 4 weeks to find out from Seat that the instructions were correct. Cost of the computer for about 2 hours work was £90+VAT, but because of the hassle you've had we'll discount that to £45+VAT.

So total walk-in price was £233 :censored:

Even with the discount I declined their offer to update 12 month old maps, and said I would consider it in a couple of years!!! Or maybe ressurect my TomTom.

Roll on the day, somebody can crack a free update!

Just wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice - bought a 10 month old 3rd generation FR three weeks ago.

The sat nav was working fine to start with but for the past few days it doesn't seem to be working at all.

The compass dial beside the speedo is stuck on north with no road names now coming up and the actual sat nav unit is no longer displaying any maps. It is just showing an arrow in the irish ocean!

I've tried inputting a destination in the vain hope that this would trigger something but it was unable to calculate any routes.

Any ideas?

I assume you mean the right hand nob on the navigation unit itself? i tried that but no luck.

for some reason it thinks the car is in the irish ocean - i can get the maps to show on the screen by rotating the RH knob but it still won't calculate any routes.

any other ideas? or is this a visit to the dealer?

Meppershall Beds.
my daughters golf had the same issue a few months ago. far as the satnav was concerned the car wasn't moving at all.
was the GPS aerial. had it done by a specialist called satnav systems in surry. Actually very reasonable. came out to her work the next day, replaced it in the office car park, charged £115.
dealer should be able to sort it but might charge you more....

So it looks that we are closer. Still must be solved these problems:

1. Ad VCDS/cable: option B5 not work with 12.12.0 version (init ... no response/error)
2. Ad Manual: on the 10th line "disconnect power" - my understanding manual said about disconnecting the battery of car (on batt power - the link to old nav card could NOT be cleared).

Other lines of manual looks clear.

Do you have any new experiences ?

Thanx, Rob

Some new ? Think we need a original vcds cable like 14. Version...

Hello!

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but being as this whole thread is pretty much the reason I found the forum it sort of makes sense. I've read through the whole thread now - seems as though all the issues I've had trying to update my maps have been the same for a bunch of folks. Except that I read this thread after I messed everything up. Silly me. Downloaded the latest versions from navigation.com (here is such a stupid name for a website btw), copied them on to my sd card and obviously that failed.

The rub? I thought I'd copied over the original map data files over and I hadn't. So now I don't have sat nav.

I saw back at the start of the thread a few people had posted up some links to their versions (036 was kicking about I think). Mine was 034.

So really, the reason I'm here is to ask a huge favour.

Does anyone still have a copy of 034 version? I have AT Europa v3 that came with the Leon.

If anyone has a copy of v3 version and could maybe upload and share or pm a cheeky link so I can just restore to what I should have stayed happy with I would very much appreciate it.

Cheers all.
