Sounds like all that's going on there is the tyres are being relocated from the wheels to the road, might have been better with traction control switched on.

I think you are right. The traction control is not all that bad, certainly not overkill in sport mode. I'm quicker with it on than I am with it off (but I am **** at blazing starts)

Numerous videos show the same outcome!

Best way to make a car faster is to lose weight, the merc is a tank.

The only thing I will say is, dont think the merc was using its race control. That's shaves a couple of tenths off its time.

Fair enough, it's all willy waving anyway. Much like the sub 8 minute ring time, meaningless in the real world. Unless you want to drag race I wouldn't be too concerned. Besides, the fella in the ring vids is a proper driver rather than an enthusiastic wanabe. I know if I tried to emulate him I would end up arse backwards in the armco!

Don't confuse bhp with torque , your diesel may be a lower bhp but it's torque that produces speed.
The other thing is your not comparing mapped cars , the Leon stock is mapped for fuel economy for a vast amount of countries , and is mapped to make the most of low down torque.
A mapped 2 TSI in any guise will be very rapid the torque will cover the while rev range and be a complete animal , whether it can use all the power is another thing unless you have 4wd

I get you. Mine is 520nm. I would bloody love a go in a 320bhp odd cupra. Would be ridiculous but a hell of a lot of fun I bet.

Tryng to persuade my bro to get one!

You are right , if a Cupra and a golf R were to pull up at a set of lights and both cars were to pull off without launch control the results would be different to the video Al posted , 4 wd is excellent for getting off the line using launch control but a bit h if it bogs down.

There's a video showing a mk6 golf R v scirroco R driven by professional drivers and the off the line the golf R gets away but once moving the scirroco soon reels the golf in , I'm pretty sure that's what will happen with the the Cupra and golf R unless the gearing has been changed , have t seen the gearing specs so can't comment.

I dont completely agree dude. 4x4 bogs down if you have a manual and you dont launch properly to the tune of the clutch being released before any kind of useful band of power has been hooked on to in order to build the revs.

For what its worth, here is a Golf R with no launch control and the same car with launch control

No launch control

With launch control

What would happen in the Leon, without launch control, is either a mess like you see in the clip above where the driver mashes the throttle in the Cupra and spreads his tyres on to the tarmac like he spreads his margarine on to his toast or he feathers it and therefore is unable to utilise the performance available to him because the engine provides too much to avoid wheelspin. Both methods are shown on the 2014 Cupra above. Of course there will be a happy medium too although it is unlikely to be much faster if at all.

Then you also have to consider that for this type of accelaration, the Cupra requires a bone dry non slippy road. The Golf will launch from 0-60 in under 5 seconds even when its wet

The Leon will always be faster once wheelspin issues are history though :)

Define speed?! :D

Power is how fast the car goes. Torque is how quick it gets there :cheeky:

No bogging down here without launch control. Yeah somewhere around 4000rpms is about right.

I doubt the Cupra would catch up below 100mph tbh, and the more power you throw at them the bigger the gap becomes. Unless already rolling of coarse but then still relying on a dry road.

The S3 in standard will do a 100mph in 10secs done with a racelogic.

My last cupra with 80hp and nearly 100lbft more torque could just about do that with a good launch.

Anyway its all swings and roundabouts, personally I think 4wd is miles better for the UK's weather, having owned both.

At the risk of being shot down for being negative, its a pretty poor advert to be honest.

the Top gear team did better with the cycling adds than that Cupra advert :(
Location is poor and the music is even worse!

The original Mk3 ad is far better in my eyes.

Has everything been announced now for the MK3 Cupra or is they still more to come?

The optional performance pack that the 7:58 ring car had fitted will need to be announced at some point so those buying the car can also lap the ring in that time.....

Some say, that will include the stig as the driver as part of the pack.......
