Extra HP after service ?

Just wonder if anybody has had the sort of thing I have the past month, explanation...

My Seat Leon 1.6 TD Copa SE DSG that I’ve had since new was 2 years old the first week of November and because the mileage is low had the second service at 10,000 miles on the clock.

Now here’s the odd thing, since the service the thing been going like a rocket and at first I thought that may be while doing the service they accidently change the gear mode somehow, however the DSG is in D and gear changes are normal as to how they would be should the box be in S mode.

This is great in one respect but as you can imagine the extra HP is at the cost of lower MPG and on average I’d say my MPG is down by 2 to 3 MPG. That said I do tend to get slightly lower MPG in colder weather so maybe come Spring I’ll have the power with the same MPG.

Nothing on the service sheet to say that they have done anything else but the second year service and the only extra parts listed is the renewal of the pollen filter.

Not too worried about it but just curious. The only other thing I could think of is may be the car had got sluggish since its first service that perhaps I did not noticed being a slow, over the year process, but I don’t think it has.

BTW I looked under the bonnet and I can’t see any extra horses under there.

They'll have changed the air filter which could have helped. Did they change the fuel filter?

A general service will certainly help in terms of probably releasing a few extra ponies depending on the state of the parts that were replaced, but I put this new found zip down to the change in weather, it's much colder now than it has been and this cold dense air is good for engines hence why it will feel more responsive, you're probably enjoying it and that's leading to the slight drop in mpg, this combined with the recent service may just have exaggerated what you would normally feel.

I guarantee if there was a way of making a graph to show the trend for this kind of thread it would spike around winter time and dip off during the summer months.

AFAIK the bill just says “oil and pollen filter change” then the consumables at the end like the oil.

The car is actually owned by Motability Operations as I’m a disabled driver so I don’t know if Motability get a more detailed invoice and the one I get is for the info about tyre and brake pad wear but it looks like a standard bill with all the cost on it.

Now there’s a thought maybe for the past 5 years they have been governing my car because of my disability and now I have 5 years no claims, they’ve lifted it.

Another thing comes to mind and thats the two years I’ve had the car there has been odd days where it seems punchier and I put it down to the way I drive i.e. normally gentile acceleration and braking but on the few longer journeys I do, faster roads more wellie and thought that was the adapted part of the DSG shifting gears to match my mood but those odd days of extra zest seem to be permanent now.

I think your right about the weather though but I can't help feeling that something been holding the car back and the service fixed something that nobody knew was broken, if you know what I mean.

I would normally put it down to the nice cool dense air winter brings but since you dropped the car in and waited I wouldn't have expected that you would notice a difference before/after service. It could however be down to a software update that may have been performed during the service to either the engine or gearbox ecu to iron out some known flaw in the programming in much the same way as your phone or pc always seems to have an update these days.

People pay good money to make their cars feel faster so a few free ponies should be welcome I reckon.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but thought I would update this unexplained increase in power.

Well the increase in power is still there and can now confirm my worst fears as I have now driven it in cold and hot weather conditions and that the MPG are way down as the ships computer is recording 35 MPG since last November whereas previous to that from new in November 2011 to November 2013 (when the dealer reset the computer) the average MPG overall was 42 MPG.

The car gets renewed in just over 3 months and I’ve decided to go back to the VW Golf because it has some extra features that are helpful to me with my disability but the Leon has been kind to me and has caused me no problems other than the MPG issues and the soft paintwork that has my hand print marks burnt into it all over but as the car is not mine I’m not too concerned so I can’t complain.

It should be pointed out that your dip in MPG is more than likely down to your new found love of the throttle pedal!

Calm it with the spirited driving and your MPG will go back to normal!

There's also RevItUpUK.com - get on their Facebook and have a word, the guy there is a fairly pleasant guy (only ever dealt with him via email right enough) and is always on the look out for well looked after performance cars - at good rates too!

That's a shame, was it much less, or close? When was it you asked? I was talking to him 3 weeks ago asking him to source me a Cupra as well... He knew my budget I'm sure (£12K) - could have made an easy sale! Picked up mines a few days after though, if you're not fast you're last eh?
