Water leak into footwell - dodgy seal info and DIY repair guide (Image links dead)

Just checked it and sure enough the deadening is wet to the bottom right hand side

remove the pollen filter and pour some water down see if it comes out the join at the bottom of the housing

Under the rear mats my carpets are slightly damp and I get a bit of condensation in the mornings.

I just took these after a torrential downpour. Should I be worrying about door seals?

i had the leaking problem in my leon when purchased,

the fixes where to remove all old foam seal from the doors and install butyl. this is the sea lthats on the inner door carrier once you unbolt it you can peal off the old seal and install the new butyl tape (Brilliant stuff)

put vaseline on door seals to improve water tightness.


take out foam seal in pollen filter tray and install butyl.

makesure the rear window washer jet pipe that runs in with the wiring loom behind the heater fan isnt

broken\fractured or disconnected, (mine was disconnected, but my leak was coming in through the
inner carrier seals and pollen filter. which is now fixed.

take out glove box and undo the 2 screws under the fan to drop the fan out and reveal if any water is in there to find out if this is the cause of your problem.

Yep. You sould be worrying, because normally the water shouldn't be there on the door rubber. That means it comes from the door card. If you say that the carpet is wet, I'm pretty sure the soft soundproofing under your carpet absorbed much water. Try to press on the carpet and feel if it's soaking... You also can remove the trim and check if it's ok under the carpet. To check the door just remove the doorcard and see if there are traces of water in the bottom of the auxiliaries panel.

I had an unpleasant situation when bought a car. Week later i found my footwells wet and I had to dismantle all interrior and remove carpets to dry them out.

When doing this repair how did people get any excess water out of the doors?

I have a Wet Vac to hand but I'd imagine a air line would be of benefit too?

Thankfully very dry.

After further investigation I do see where the water is creeping in over the rubbers.

I don't have it bad but will do the repair soon.

The lower b-pillar trim is fixed with plastic clips. If I well remember you should start to pull from top-front corner. If it's hard fixed you can first insert something underneath...

I'm going to attempt this fix at the weekend on my Leon, but also on my mother's Passat.
I just have a question regarding the butyl tape...what thickness should I purchase?
