MK5 Cupra or Bocanegra

Hi guys, I currently drive a Corsa C but looking into buying a 1.4 TSI MK5 Cupra or Bocanegra and i would like to know the following.

1. Is their any real difference between the two models apart from the front bumper?
2. Heard they drink alot of oil, again is this for both or just 1 model?
3. How realiable are they, is one more reliable than the other and is it worth buying with warranty?
4. Is the DSG gearbox any good?
5. Ive only heard bad things about the 10 plate so are the 09/59 and 11 plates fine or is this false?

Would really appreciate your feedback, i did search the forum beforehand but could not find answers to all my questions.

1.) Bocanegra and Cupra are basically much of a muchness. Bocanegra has gloss black plastics / colour coding...dash of fake carbon fiber and some 'B' logos on the red stitched seats.
2.) Yes, they tend to drink oil, particularly the older models. If you can get an 11plate, they have revised engine internals and tend not to suffer as badly as earlier models. You just need to check the levels and keep an eye on it.
3.) Reliability depends on who you talk to. Some people have had issues, others have had none. I'm onto my 2nd Bocanegra now and so far have had no issues whatsoever after 7000 miles.
4.) Yes, I think DSG is good. Auto is great for everyday boring commute. Flick it to manual for when you want to have a bit of fun. Best of both worlds. However, to be fair, I do sometimes miss manual. If that is going to be an issue for you, go for a manual FR version and think about a remap.
5.) See answer 2 ;)

I really like these cars. Have previously owned Renault Sports and am more than happy with the Bocanegra. If I was choosing between Boc and Cupra, it would be Boc without question. That said, I wouldn't say no to a cupra if the price was right.

Hope this helps.

Cheers mate, think an 11 plate might be slightly out of budget, Im just fed up of a 1.0. Might go for the 1.6 FR first then and upgrade in a year or two.
Any major problems with 1.6 FR?

They're painfully slow?

Just get. 1.4tsi fr, and remap it
+1 I've got a bocanegra like but in all honesty if I was buying 2nd hand I'd just buy a 1.4tsi fr and with the money I would of saved instead of buying a cupra or boca I would modify the fr so its quicker.

What needs to be done to make it quicker or same speed?

The fr is just a de-tuned cupra from factory they give it 150bhp instead of 180bhp. If you get a stage 1 remap on an fr or a cupra they will both map to the same bhp.

Obviously there is the difference in regards to body kit and interior etc but engine wise they are the same as far as I am aware.

In regards to what? Anything?
Personally I have had none touch wood, was using oil but well within the limits so no I haven't had any dramas. Some people however have had a right chew on with their 1.4tsi's drinking oil and needing engine rebuilds or replacements but this is a forum so I would say you are going to find a higher concentration of people with problems looking to solve them and find information out about them. Also my car is an 11 plate just for reference.

Alright mate,

I was pretty much in the same boat as yourself, Wanted a Boc but didnt wan't to pay extra for the name, then found out the FR is the exact same engine as the cupra and boc just a de-tuned version, so I went for that and i've had no regrets since.

Mapped the car easily puts out the same power as the cupra's and lets face it the alloys on the FR are far nicer :)

Interior wise the only differences are the stiching and labels on the seats plus I think the boc has the carbon fibre vinyl's.

But don't think that because it's de-tuned it wont have the same problems, I've had a complete engine replacement and to be honest it has made a difference, besides you'll forget all about that when your driving in it !

i was in the same boat two years ago but i decided on the cupra rather than the fr and bocanegra.

The bocanegra and fr were rediculous to insure for a 23 year old male with 4 years no claims, the cupra however was half the price - no brianer if you ask me!

1) i went with the cupra but i dont miss the extra paint and red stitching from the bocanegra.
2) mine has been drinking a fair bit of oil and is booked into have this looked at.
3) mine has been 100% reliable and never once let me down.
4) DSG is great, commuting is easier with this - its replacement will be DSG/auto
5) i have a ten plate and like i said its been great bar the oil consumption but fingers crossed this will be fixed on its next visit.

I personally would choose the cupra over the other two again.

my 2p....but i suggest you get out there and drive them :)

No, the FR with 150bhp is.
Aw I see. I was amazed at the Cupra when I drove it.

I drove a Nissan GTR back in August and i'm not joking when I say the Cupra reminded me of it to a certain degree.
