Alright you lot! :)

This is my first post on the mk2 section! ;)
I own a mk1 1.6 and I have always wanted a mk1 Cupra R or Tdi FR so I haven't ever had a need to post on this part of the site...until now.

This is typical me, after wanting a sporty Mk1 for years and years, I have had a change of mind. The mk1 isn't getting any younger and I would like a bit of a change.
I never really found the mk2 particularly good looking, but the Cupra's have really grown on me and particularly in white. I went to see a local Cupra for sale today, a red Tfsi, just to see it in the flesh and I was very impressed. Inside and out it actually forced a large....smile. lol
I'm quite a tough one to please as well!

Getting to the point now! Which engine?!
I was after a diesel initially because of the economy, torque and good remapping potential, but I'm not so sure anymore.
My weekly work commute is 40 miles! Weekends I can drive anything from 20-50 miles, which again isn't exactly a lot and my annual mileage is about 3-4K!
I imagine a lot of people that hear those statistics are thinking RS4 or something similar with regards to thirst and speed!
I've got to think sensibly here though, I'm 24, don't have a house yet so need to think seriously about the future. Running costs of a diesel are also cheaper.

The reason I said I'm not so sure anymore is that, would the cost of diesel actually work out cheaper for me? I heard someone say unless your doing around 8k miles annually it won't be any better than petrol, but are diesels better anyway? More expensive to buy but, they hold value too, so that's swings and roundabouts!

Argh! I've typed too much! What do you think?

Diesels your looking around 15k miles a year from what ive heard, to make economical sense over a petrol engine! Also if your driving is town based you may end up with DPF issues.

Cant help you much further than that because i have a 1.2tsi haha

Iv got the 140 tdi and i love it. I'm 23 and pretty much in the same boat but i have a lil boy. The diesel ticks all the boxes. Lower tax, insurance and running costs. Plus i can use the money i save from the above to mod :) id love a cupra r but I'm MORE than happy with my refference sport ir RS as i call it hahaha

I do around 5k miles a year and decided to get a diesel for a change.
It's a se copa ecomotive and it's giving better mpg than my old 1.6 petrol already even it's a new engine. Then again, it's not THAT much better. Around 33-40% better atm i'd say. Hope it'll get better when it's run in.

If you're doing 20-50 miles during weekend, I'd think you won't have dpf problem unless it's all town trips.

What exactly are DPF issues? Is this to do with turning off a warm turbo diesel and not letting it 'settle'
I do feel a little anxious about buying a diesel and not using it 'properly'
It's a solid bit of kit is a tdi engine and an expensive one at that!
My knowledge of diesel's though is pretty poor, needless to say!

If you can do a short trip(10+ miles) every few weeks at a steady 50+ you shouldn't get any issues with dpfs

Cheers for that link Dave! I'll give it a proper read in the morning.
Ideally a diesel wouldn't want me as an owner, although I will drive it appropriately I can't always guarantee I'll do the weekend miles! I'll no doubt only do the work miles some weeks.

The dpf put me off the fr 170 that's why i went for the 140 because as far as I'm aware they don't have dpf's so happy days

I had a PD170 and got rid for a CR170. It's the PD engine that gives all the DPF problems. It runs too rich for the DPF. The CR was designed to have a DPF rather than the DPF being an after thought.

I currently drive a mk2 leon tdi fr, and have been driving it for the last 4 years. I do a 45-50 mile daily commute to work (95% Motorway), and it was ideal for me for that reason. However, the fr is being passed onto the misses and I am picking up a mk2 leon cupra on Saturday. I was very apprehensive about the big increase in fuel at first, but my moto is if you can afford it why not as you only live once.

With regards to the pd170 there are the injector issues and the dpf, the injector's will be replaced free from Seat so its not to much of an issue. I have had the dpf light come on a few times in 4 years of ownership but a 10-15 min journey at 2.5k rpm soon clears it.

Hi mate. The thing to bear in mind when considering diesel over petrol is if you are buying a cupra/fr type variant your more than likely to run it on super unleaded for best performance, which is pretty much the same price as standard diesel, so a diesel will always give you better return in that situation.
I drive a cupra and get about 320 miles to a tank. If I had a diesel I rekon I'd get about 450-500ish +.

Cheers lee.

I imagine the extra cost of buying the derv will be offset by the extra cost of fuel (mpg wise) and road tax etc on a petrol.

DPF will be an issue if only doing 4-5 mile trips.

Doing roughly 280-320 miles on a full tank, that's around 4 miles a day plus short weekend journeys (15 miles max usually). £70 every 2-3 weeks on V Power.

What would a derv expect to do?!

My first full tank in the LCR lasted me 397Miles, Since then ive averaged 310,320miles

PD170 was getting me about 450miles on average out of a tank, CR170 will get you 500+

Thanks for the info and help so far guys.
I think I will be fine with a diesel to be honest, even if I do feel like I haven't driven it much I can just give it a burn out of the village and do a few miles in a round trip after work or something.

The tax and insurance on a petrol 170 is just daylight robbery!
I object paying it in a way, but it is the expense which does put me off more so.

I'd like some more info on models if anyone is willing to help? Also remapping potential on them?
I knew enough about the mk1 range of petrol and diesel but I am a total newbie to mk2's!
