Been having a look recently at getting a boost controller for my car. I think it's going to need to have some selectable boost programmes so that the car can be used in all conditions without lighting up the front wheels and spinning the power away. I was thinking along the lines of something like

10PSI for running in very wet conditions
18/20 PSI for running as a daily driver
28/30 PSI for running max power

I have been looking at the Apexi AVC-R which is IMO one of the most complex boost controllers out there with regards to features. It gives gear limited boost control as well as the scramble boost function. Gear limited boost control would be great as 1st - 3rd traction is going to be pretty difficult and the scramble boost feature AFAIK allows you to momentarily increase the boost pressure from the setting that you are currently running so if you are running 20PSI it would allow you to go to 30PSI at the push of a button.

The Apexi is one of the most expensive boost controllers out there but it does offer the most functionality, the other option is to go for something simpler with a simple 3 setting feature.

Has anyone got any thoughts about which one has worked well for them?

I have used a avcr on my old punto gt and my mate had one on his coupe 20v turbo there great once set up correctly
Especially with choosing the boost per gears to help with traction

The apexi does look like a great bit of kit, but it is also the most expensive when you add up the cost of the unit and setting it up correctly. But you get what you pay for i suppose.

Boost Creep

Spoke with Bill last night who is in the progress of mapping my car. The car is producing great power really early in the RPM range, it is hitting 1BAR around 3K RPM although there is a problem with boost creep.

Now my understanding of this isn't great but here goes see if I've got it right. The tubular manifold from TSR is made from 1.25" pipework including the wastegate pipe. Perhaps this manifold was designed for smaller turbo's and not something of this size / power.

This is causing the pressure to build up inside the manifold and not vent as much exhaust gas through the wastegate as wanted, (can't seem to get it below 18PSI ish) now although 18PSI isn't THAT bad it produced nearly 400BHP @ 18PSI which means that my thoughts of trying to get a boost controller to control the boost to circa 300BHP is going to be impossible. The saving grace of this is that it is going to be VERY progressive and not have massive boost spikes which will make it more "driveable" as traction is going to be an issue anyway.

What are the solutions?

1. Speak to TSR and send the manifold back to them and get them to remove the current 1.25" pipe and weld in a 1.5" pipe in EXACTLY the same position so that the wastegate pipe into the downpipe still fits. This will allow more volume of gas to vent through the wastegate and subsequently remove the creep.

2. Live with it!!

I have to say a big thanks to Bill for his patience with me, i'm not the easiest of customers as I can be a bit of a pest sometimes but bill has never lost his patience and has always taken the time to explain things in layman's terms.

If you change the size of the wastegate piping you'll probably need to up the size of the wastegate too. I think the flanges of the wastegate are designed to accomodate the same sized pipes. I.e 38mm MVs = 1.25" 44mm = 1.5"

I would be tempted to run as is and just learn to use that left foot in analogue mode not digital :)

Yer, the same old story of less of a heavy foot :)

The problem has only really come about because the car is running to efficiently i suppose, making boost very early and making lots of it.
